I agree... the sails used in ships are made up of thick cloth , but not enough to completely block sunlight. So just tweak that material on the sails a bit and you should also get some nice light puring through on to the ship to light it up a bit. The image is still awesome, reminds me of that movie "Master And Commander". The ocean shader is really nice and love those details you added with photoshop. Nice work!

great job on the water. would like to see a larger version once the ship is a little brighter. looks like there are some amazing details on there but they're so small right now.

With the waves rolling up the side of the ship as high as the stern galleries (windows of the captain's cabin), a captain would NEVER have the ship's gunports open, for fear of water shipping aboard and foundering the vessel. The ports were only opened during battle, or in port for ventilation. Also, the surface of the water would denote a calm sea, with very little or no wave action, spray or whitecaps, borne out by the use of all sails set, including the outer studdingsails (st'u'ns'ls), staysails and flying jibs (which would only be set for trying to catch as much of the light breezes as could be done). So, even though this is a good render, a little more accurate research is needed to really make this look right.....
