View Full Version : FumeFX render problem
Tempest726 05-22-2008, 03:02 AM I'm creating a simple explosion in 3DS Max 08 using FumeFX.
I've created a simple scaling sphere on a plane with a fumeFX grid and source object.
In my FumeFX UI I can play the simulation in the preview window just fine. It looks perfect!
However, when I try to render it using the normal "teapot" render menu, it renders just the normal sphere being scaled without any FumeFX, burning, nothin'!
I am not sure why it is not rendering in the FumeFX when I try and make it render normally.
If any has the cure, or guidance, it's greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Kinda hard to tell without looking at file scene. Whats render engine are you using? What settings do you have on the Rendering panel within FumeFx itself? Can u post some screen shots.

OK, so I've been rendering this in Mental Ray and am getting no fume results.
Here are my screenshots:
FumeFX render tab:

It working in FumeFX simulation:

So there is basically my issue. The only thing I changed through this was the Heat Production increased from 10.0 to 15.0, the expansion from 1.0 to 2.0, and the "fuel creates smoke" radio box. Oh, and I also scrubbed the "Spacing" down on the fume General tab from like 3.3 to 1.066. (I read this will give a better quality burn)
And that's really it, if I turn my sphere off from being renderable Mental Ray renders nothing but a blank white plane. Hopefully those are enough shots to depict what I am doing wrong. I've tried going back to the drawing board and I still seem to come out empty handed.
Feedback is appreciated!

U cannot render FumeFx with Mental Ray, not supported. Weird that u didnt get an error message.

Well, now I feel silly. No, there was never an error message, I'm going to try it again with the standard. Is there a renderer you'd recommend me use for things of this nature?
Thanks,

Scanline does a fairly good job, altho doesnt handle shadows all that well, I would recomend VRay or FinalRender.

Quoted for agreement. I have vray myself, while it does a good job, I think finalrender may be a bit better, since Rif (the fume guru) has close ties to the developers of fR, things get optimized for fume.
Vray seems to have gotten pretty stagnent as far as atmospherics are concerned since the development of Aura came to a creeping halt. I think they are sticking with their ArchVis clients more and more and leaving us fx junkies behind.

I think I should try another renderer.
I am now having an issue with my flame quality. I won't ramble on every time I have a problem, but I tried a bunch of different settings and still can't get a flame like ones I find from others. Here I've uploaded a screenshot of my flame (left) and one I'd like to simulate (right) and they're nothing alike. My quality is all washed out and very "fake" looking.

Thanks guys!

Once again, hard to tell what the issues are, could be a bunch of stuff. Guess u need some torbulence, bring down spacing, add more vorticity, reduce advection stride and so on. I would suggest u strart by checkin out the available Fumefx tutorials, read the help files and if u can get Allans DVD.
