I have been asked by a client (not Nokia) to create a 3 minute animation similar to this Nokia video. The animation may be used on Television, for presentation or the web. It looks like they took video of the model and then somehow traced over the film to get the sketchy effect. Does anyone know how this is done and what software might be employed to do this?

Could I use Painter to do this and somehow animate it? If I use Sketch and Toon then I would need to model, rig and animate the character. (Too much work for this project) Or can I somehow import the video into Cinema 4D and then render it in SKetch and Toon or import the video into AE and then use a filter or trace over the video somehow?

Any suggestions as to how I might do this sketchy style would be appreciated. :)

Not an exact fit, but may get you there:

*yuck*, what an ugly ansd noisy website (for a commercial product, that is). Anyway, to the matter at hand: The spot is clearly drawn and not generated by some simple effects. Your best bet is to start using Auto Trace and 3D Stroke to create the calligraphic strokes and then work your way through frame by frame. Depending on the source footage, you may be able to prepare it accordingly to facilitate tracing or even employ some effects. AE does provide all the basics from Posterize, Threshold to Find Edges, it's just up to you to combine them and put them to use. Relying on Sketch & Toon in C4D would never work - all it would do is put the contours around the image plane you mapped the texture to and posterize the texture. Without proper render buffers to separate the objects or find creases it can only do so much...
