Hi guys im trying to light a school that i have made, its for a horror surivial game so the lighting needs to be pretty dark and scary lots of highlights and shaodws etc. But im not sure whats the best way around getting that effect. I have corridors and libarys with lots of windows and candles running down the hallways.

Example of the concept art for it.....

I kinda want like a Silent Hill gariny scary type look to it, i have to redner it out as a movie file with the camera going around the building.

Thanks in advance for the help :)

Take a look at the Haunted Hallway challenge in the Lighting Challenges section of this site

Some good examples in there.

why not rent some horror movies on a dvd? and study lighting in them. references, references and once more references -> nothing better to have a look at.
im quite sure you'd find plenty of movie screens with creepy schools over the internet too. study them.
play with the lighting, try to create some mistery a riddle maybe. like driving the viewer's eye into some point like a half opened doors with a dim light behind making you think "what's behind it?" etc.

maybe you could show us the exact scene you are having problems with?

I'd say your best bet would be to really work with the decay settings of your lights...crank the intensity up if you have to, and place most of your lights on the side or below or above, just not right in front of your character...to get those film noir shadows...Also try leaving your character in silouette for a shot or 2,

OR

try some flickering lights from off screen, really makes a creepy mood, and also dont be afraid to leave a majority of your image in almost total black and only have pools of light where its visually interesting!

I kind of want to give it a try now!

" cuculoris " on your lights will get you where you want to be.
Just do a little reasearch and make some to use either animated or static projectors or shadow casters.
