Hey there. I'm pretty new to CGtalk, so be nice. :)

So I've been working on this tank for about a week now. I'm modelling from a plastic model I have on my desk. It's a tank from the Warhammer 40k game, for the Space Marine army. I'm building the Crusader variant. I guess it's a bit late in the game, as modelling is over half done, but I figured I'd start a WIP thread to get input and such. When it is done I'm planning to model some marines to go with it. Here are some shots:

Here is a cool animation of the side guns: [link] (http://analogbubblebath.net/~crayon/my_graphics/landraider5.avi)

Here is an out of date 360 spin that mostly shows the body detail on the sides: [link] (http://analogbubblebath.net/~crayon/my_graphics/landraider3.avi)

Here is a picture of the actual model I'm working from:

Anyone got suggestions?

I'm working on this quite a bit, so expect fairly frequent updates.

Looks really good. What program are you modeling it in?

Also what kind of lighting set up are you using to give it that soft look?

Hey it's qu2k. thanks for the replies, guys. I'm modelling with 3ds max 4. I'm rendering with plain old Brzil skylight to get that soft look. Here is a wire done with edgemap:

Also, if anyone has any idea how to do the tracks and animate them, PLEASE TELL ME! How on earth should I go about that? I tried pathDeform and didn't get it to work. If anyone knows, please post here.

I need votes for everyone's favorite colors.
Also pick your fav between the left and right column. The left has 2 GI bounces, the right has 1.

hey if ya need any extra pics i can break out the camera and send you some.

i have an idea for the tracks on moving but i have too look into it then i could email you an explanation.

looks good though except i don't like the llok of the heavy bolters on the side.

your useing the pic of the promethius, i would have stuck to the standard.

white one, definitely

question though

is that a track on the sides? id suggest it would be, but the shape is kinda odd, its just a box, lil bit modified

Wow. I really like the your model. There's just something cool about futuretech heavy armour. The orange one has the most realistic material. That's not to say it's the best colour, but it looks the most proper because the shading shows most of the geometry. Nice work so far and thanks for posting the wireframe, it's always a help to see how people model.

For the detail geometry like turret mounts, hatches etc. do you weld those pieces to the main body or are they detatched elements?

tbe white one definatly looks the best out of those, i suspect that its because of the saturation values on the others tho, any colour will look fine

nice modeling.. you should render your vids for quicktime tho

cool model... I think the white one looks best too. I would love some wires and textures... good work!

The colour should depend on the Chapter to which it belongs :P

I think I'm all set with the tracks. I'm going to work on that today. I don't need any pics, thanks, I have the model where i work. But what's this about me doing a promethius? I'm not familiar with that variant. I thought I was modelling a standard Crusader. That's the model I have and i thought i was reproducing it pretty accuratley. How is the promethius different?

Caman0:
Sorry, I didn't mention (I thought it was clear), those are just stand-ins for the tracks that I haven't modelled yet.

Goldeneye:
Right now, everything is made up of detached elements. Like the sides of the hull are made up of dozens of pieces, each with 20-100 faces. WHen it comes time to texture, I will probably connect a lot of them. I havent really textured before, but I think i'm meant to break it down in to big flat pieces.

Nov@:
Thanks for the link, but it didn't help that much. I'm just not sure which specific MAX functions I should use. I think I'm pretty much all set, though.

Another update tomorrow, probably with tracks.

Here's the newest update. I did tracks today. And they are fairly easily animatable. :)

http://analogbubblebath.net/~crayon/my_graphics/landraider19.jpg

They are fairly low-poly as i want to keep the entire tank to about 150k polys max. it's at 90 now I think. anyway, things will look much better with textures. :)

cool.. This is really impressive:applause:

why would you want to keep it at 150k? its kind of pointless. as long as you are that high, keep goin

Oh, dude, that's totally impressive. Lovely model.

I'd go crazy trying to chamfer all those edges, but that's just a sickness I have...hehe.

Looks great, really. Congrats.

I'm just trying to keep a fairly low poly count so that scenes in some animations i make have less than 2 million polys.

Here's a render I did and compiled with premier: [link] (http://analogbubblebath.net/~crayon/my_graphics/landraider10.avi)

Look'n sweet, buddy, really. I noticed you worked out your tank treads...They look great. Any plans to animate 'em?

I was also wondering if you'd mind briefly explaining your modeling methods for everyone. By the wireframes, it looks as though you used a combination of simple extrusions, heavily edited booleans, and some good-old poly-by-poly stuff. The model looks very clean. Again, give us a head's up on your methods, if you feel so inclined. :D

Can't wait to see the sucker in action.

Oh nice. Sweet picture indeed. Yeah, I'm not modeling that one. But it's cool none-the-less. :airguitar

So, my modelling technique. The large majority of my object begin as extruded splines. I find that to be a very good method for this as most of the tank is made up of flat armor panels. I usually divide it up into lots of fairly simple objects, so that the initial splines have about 10 points or less. Then I go at them with the boolean too. But booleans suck >_<. It's so great in theory, it just makes such a mess. When it comes time to texture I will probably delete a lot of faces on the bools and re-make some polys. I did do some simple box modelling on bits like the ridges along the bottom of the sides. I'm also a big fan of the lath tool. A lot of details like lights and rivets are done in that manner.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I'll have another update in a few days probably.

Another update. I'm really happy with how it's coming along. I'd say I'm about 70% done with modelling. Here is the image (sorry, it's about 300KB on a slow server. But I'd say it's worth the wait):

Wow, it's looking very nice. I'd like to see some wires of the "cuts" you make in the hull. All that it needs now is some dirt. I like the tread-cover you added.

looks incredible. BUT i think you need some more metal textured pieces on it..but thats just my opinion, it may or may not look good:D

hey here's one i did I built it very quickly cause of a deadline but maybe you could use it for some idea's...I changed it aroung quite a bit...nice to see that you are sticking to the proportions of the actual model ...and nice to see another one of these beeing built...you are doing a great job true to the design and I will be waiting for the finish~
