View Full Version : Vehicle - Type VIIc41 German U-boat Maya Project
Undseth 05-18-2003, 07:32 AM Hmm, its hard to find any good pics and especially any drawings of the machineguns and stuff for this boat.
Feel free to contact me if any of you happen to have technical drawings of any 20mm MG151's, 37mm, or Quad 20mm's.
Right now, the project is up to 44.000 polygons, and some nurbs surfaces.
What do you think? -I feel comfortable with this amount of detail.
I guess it will be nice to model some of the crew too. Well, that'll have to come later.

Continue like this....
Great amount of detail!!!
I think you can find some details on modelling sites... I'll make a quick search an post you something if I find it....

Am I doing something wrong in photoshop? My jpeg files are way too big for CGtalk limitation of 30kb.
edit:
Ok, I uploaded to a site and linking it from here.

I like it, so far very good. What do you plan to do with it when you finish it (some animation?). I've always wanted to model u-bootbut got no time.

Photoshop has problems with saving files and keepin limits it's better when you so use save for web option. And reamember that 30kb is more than 30000 bytes (limit on cgtalk). But you can use some free web hosting imo one of the best is lycos.co.uk

Hey thanks!
Initially, I did not intend to make any animation, but after listening to some really cool intro music by Cristopher Franke, I really want to make a short animation, full of movement and tempo.

Oh, this was fun. I promise to go ahead (of course, although my latest projects came to a halt). My Blackhawk/Deserthawk prosject accidentally got deleted, and my Tomcat is put on ice in the waiting for motivation.
Um, here's a mental ray rendering. Not perfect, but ok I think for now.

I wanted to model the hull of the submarine, so that I could in the end, use the handy nurbs tools to cut out small holes and such.
Now, I have gotten around to make the hull (almost finished), my previous idea turned out to be a problem, as I could not get a single nurbs surface, when convertig from Poly-->SubD-->NURBS.
I ended up with many nurbs patches which did not seem to be easily "attatchable" to each other. (Any ideas? Anyone?)
So now I have a smoothed poly surface (all quads), which makes a very nice Sub-D surface when converted, but I have to cut out each of the small drainage holes "manually" with the poly tools.
The following is 9000 faces on each side. Amazing how I could stay on track using quads, I imagined it would be soo hard.

Used the poly tools to cut out each-and-every-one of the holes in the submarine hull.

lol looks cool u shpould concider yourself lucky that you can even put in those holes. i use blender and i got a hole less sub and a very strange shaped torpedo tube lol cos blender has not poly editing function
but urs looks rather sweet, one question tho are you going to ut in torpedo tubes? and the tanks on the side dont look smooth enough, could just be me
ah yeh where did u get ur refernce pics from, i used uboat.net loads of photos

blastzone: Whaaat, do you think the side"tanks" looks rough? They should be very smooth, or smooth enough.
Hmm the torpedo tubes will have to be cut out and modeled. I have a good fix on the position of the tubes, and I guess this won't give me any problem. But I never know for sure.
Hey, I found a GREAT drawing for this Type VIIc/VIIc41 submarine on some modeling site. I stumbled upon a BIG file hidden somewhere.
Site:
http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/dkm/u-boat/TypeVIIC_build/building_and_converting_the_amat.htm
Here's the big file:

http://www.fineartmodels.com
They sell huge models with brass etched parts for a small fortune.

Fun to hear! It's good to be able to have some control with the modeling tools now. Have learned a few tricks in getting things modeled close to the way I want.

in ur latest update the tanks look fine as in from the side but one of the images above it look a little weird, might just be the angle
Undseth
05-29-2003, 07:15 PM
Hehe yeah now I know why.
The pic above (which didn't load at this moment for some reason) shows the sub at a particular time, when that particular side was not fully modeled. It looks better now, with crisper edges, after I inserted more edges before smoothing a final time.

Good to be done with the hard parts. Now, only details remain.

Still not finished with the modleling, but I am getting close.
I cut off the outmost part of the bow and remodeled it. I added a 20mm "Vierling" flak (because it looks more cool than the 37mm). Probably not historically correct on this VIIc41 model, but the VII had such configurations with a quad flak.
Hmm, I could use some tip on realism here. I am willing to add details, but I want to get som tips on achieving realism with mental ray.
The con tower has had its UV maps arranged. But I have yet to figure out some really good mapping.
And what about the sharpness here? I think its too blurred for my liking. It has the highest sampling with the standard maya renderer, with the "multi-something" checked (standard).
And this was rendered with the GI_Joe script.
Is the sampling giving me a too blurred image you think?
Im thinking HDRI lighting, and decent mapping. But please feel free to share you mastermind regarding getting a photorealistic result in the final rendering.

99.9 % complete modeled. Hrm, just found out that my anchor is positioned a bit "too-much-over-the hydroplanes". Easy to fix (luckily)
Mental ray; HDRI lighted, 8000 and 4000 FG rays.
Will render out a brass looking model with HDRI reflections later today, when my computer is not bizzy doing the other thing i want it to do.

Thats really really cool now all you need to do to boost up the poly count and make it even better is add all 10 000 bolts in her!!! :p

BEAUTIFUL work
can we see a wire?

*grins*
I'll throw up a "wireframe on shaded" from Maya later, but taking a snapshot of my screen and make a jpeg of it, creates huge files of up to 100 kb. I dont get it...
Anyway, I hope this thread makes up for all of my discontinued projects shown at CG talk.

Hey thanks guys!
The following is a real wip pic.
The bump map isnt good (although I have drawn it four-five times by now).
Info invisible surrounding sphere:
HDRI color mapped
HDRI incandescense mapped (gray and dull)
Info sub-hull (mapsize= 3072x3072):
Colormap
Bumpmap
SpecularFallOffmap
Now things start to get fun!

hay that is fantastic, any chance of getting a view from the conning tower over looking the main deck?
Undseth

Hi there Kurt! :D
Could be I'll post a view from the conning tower, but hehe, I may have problems in keeping my promises Hollis.
Heres the latest. Bumpmap is now much better. Still need to darken some parts of the bumpmap, to get a deeper recess into the plates of the hull. The welding seems is almost perfect (I may draw them again), but its "depth" still needs to be lowered in Maya, but it's a small thing.
I think this looks nice now. Some other HDRI maps, and the color will be nicer, and presumably with some stronger highlights on the hull.

Hehe I have already moved the anchor. The photos show that the anchor is pretty close to the hydroplanes, just not on top of them, so I moved the anchor sligthly forward.

Almost done with the mapping of the hull.

Well, I'm almost satisfied with the bump map. I want more bump on the plates.
As a suprise, I could not see any effect of the specularRollOff map. I have no clue. I have to check it again.
I started to try out the ocean shader, but I do not have a supercomputer, so it may take a while to get to know the ocean shader. Sooo many sliders on that shader...

I think you are right, I should put on some dirt and stuff. I never though of that honestly.
I have yet to make the specularrolloffmap. I did make it but it doesnt show.
Hmm I have to move to another appartement these days, and between my worries and doing something about it, have left me with little time these last days to go further.
But I have the bump map all ready, thats something.

Incedible details! How long did u take to model this boat?
That reminds me the U-571 from the movie U-571 ehe :)
i think i am gonna try to model some u-boats...hmmmm....

Thanks!
Hmm I think the project is about a month old by now.
I was at the library today and discovered this submarine in a machines/building-cut-apart-book. It said the fueltanks on this sub is the bulging things outside the hull. I didnt know that, I though it was for preassured air or something.
Another thing, the exhaust vent is situated inside the rear part of the conning tower.

Holy sh.... well you get the point.
I have a phobia of the ocean, especially in deep waters because of submarines. Yeah I know weird... but this model is giving me the chills.

really nice model... to say the least :)
i stumbeld apon this link today and i thought you might have some use for the pictures there... about 200 of them, so beware!
hope it might help a little ;)

Thanks!!!
There were some interesting close ups there.
I found the deck to be the hardest part to visualize. It's made of wood, but I have little clue as to how it is constructed. Some photos there helped out a little.
I wish I owned those photos right now.

glad to be of help!
if you're looking for good wwII pictures, there's plenty of good forums on the subject
try www.panzergrau.com
i saw a few threads regarding u-boats that might help you, or you can even ask for hel yourself :)
good luck!
