I've been teaching myself to use Lightwave by cooking up this model of a King Tiger tank, and learning through my mistakes. Here's where I am at so far.
Currently I'm doing a fair chunk of model cleanup and optimization before moving onto more pieces. Expect more pics soon...

WOW :applause:

Really nice work.... how did you do the tracks?!?!??! I would have no idea how to do them.....

Start to do some texturing!!!

nice tiger is this your first lightwave model or are you just trying to improve?

Hey thanks all,

bingo 7:

I made 2 different track piece types (cause they aren't all the same) and then rail-copied them around a path spline to fit. Boy that geometry adds up fast. There are several great tutorials out there for how to set up the animation of treads, which I will do in the next week or so

blastzone:

No this is my first full lightwave model. Warming up the skills for a new job I got that needed lightwave. I've mostly been working in Max the past few years, and LW is a fair bit different I've been finding.

Yeah I'll get some more pics up as soon as I can.

Thanks Gnome....

I tried it, by I cannot get the first and last track to connect... :hmm: :annoyed: :hmm:

Is there something I'm doing wrong or should I tweak it by hand?

by doing this I probably have to change the dimentions of the track itself, and I dod'nt want to do it......

Don't know how to do it, I keep on trying....

Here's one of the tutorials I was following for setting up animatable tank treads.

http://www.cgfocus.com/ArticleDetails.cfm?ArticleID=118

As for the Rail Clone pieces lining up. you either have to have very specific measurements for the perimeter length and length of your treads to know how many there should be, or trial and error testing what number to clone. I did the latter until it was very very close to lined up. Usually it doens't need to be exact unless its an engineering project.

Got some more work done on the rear details...

http://members.shaw.ca/craigcalvert/tank02.jpg

... and have a bunch of little bits to add on the sides and top still like a shovel and sledge-hammer, jack and webbing.

Some detail of the front tread area...

Enjoy!

Looks very good so far. Especially the tracks are nice detailed. Hope you do the same with the rest of the tank.

Cheers Migi

love the detail most exelent work very impressed

i got just 1 small crit on the pic of the closeup of the track the front wheel has sections sticking out but i can't see any holes in the tread for these to go through when the tank is moveing

does that make any sence ?? shure ya can work out what i'm getting at

I Really enjoyed your model, I'm a very big fan of WWII and I'm working in the same thank that you are modeling.

I'm modeling a Panzerkapfwagen King Tiger II. I'm showing to you some of my works.

I did not finished this model Yet.

Thanks.

Hi,

your model looks really nice.
But something is wrong on the frontwheel.
It looks like the nuts are not connected to the wheel.

arai: Yeah yeah... Maybe if I slacked as hard as you do at work the texturing would be done. ;) lol

GForce: By gum, you're right! I didn't add the holes into the main track yet because the poly-count would go way, way up. I'm thinking of faking it with textures until there's a closeup on the treads. The ones hanging off the turret and rear of the tank have the holes in them.

Caman0: Currently the whole tank is sitting at around a hefty 430,000 polys - and that's with some optimization. Yeah, I switched focus to the rear to fill in some gaps before properly tidying up the front. I'm missing that light and some hinges on the front track covers, along with a few other tidbits. And yeah, when I start texturing I'll get that big'ol coating of anit-magnetic zimmerit paste all over it.

Klaus: All we get is red X's man

Stephan B: By gum, you're right too! Pretty handy doing a render to find these things out!

Thanks for the comments all. When I get some more time - probably tonight - I'll finish off the last bits and then get to texturing.

Great modeling very detailed. Are u going to texture this cutie?

Gnome

My plan is to finish the modelling in the next 2 days, then rig it for animation, then texture is up and comp it into a live action plate chargin down a road, or through a field or something. My reel needs some sprucing up in the modelling area, and I thought this would be a fun thing to do.

I think that those tracks are too lined up, you should set them loose a bit and maybe a more smooth bending...
