Hi,

I am totally knew to photoshop and i have some newbie questions. I am trying to model and texture a very basic sword(i think its a good place to start, heh). Anyway, I have found some tutorials on how to make metal textures and stuff, but i don't know how to make them polished looking. How do i make my metal polished? Is it all in the lighting? Also, is there a way to give things depth without actually modelling them? I know there is bump maps and i am still reading up on those and things, but i was just wondierng if someone would help me out.

Thanks,

Ashe

Hello :)

I think that what you may want to look into is specularity. Using specularity allows you to control how shiney your object is. Using glossiness in conjunction with specularity allows you to control how tight that spread of light on the surface is. As a beginner to texturing, I would highly recommend that you browse through the "Texturing for Dummies" threads here in this forum. They are pretty long, but those discussions certainly contain a wealth of information, contributed by people from people all over :)

And yeah, bump maps can help you to create the illusion of topographical details that are not actually modelled, but you must be aware that a bump map should never be used to compensate for geometry that should be there. Bump maps should only be used for things like scratches, light abrasions, cellular grain, etc.
