ok, i've just swithced over to maya from 3ds max and i have a few basic questions. sorry if they've already been answered.

first off: sometimes when i'm extruding an edge the transform gizmo rotates so that it's a little off. this is what i'm talking about

how can i change it so it's aligned more perpindicular to the face?

also, in 3ds max they had a feature called soft selection, is there anything like this is maya?

finally, what are the best plugins for maya? i'm very excited to try out its dynamics, water, particle systems, hair, and cloth. they look AMAZING. however, sometimes there are plugins out there that offer much better solutions to the ones that are pre-packaged, or that offer something else that doesn't come with the program. so, what are the top few best and most important plugins that you would recommend to increase the productivity of maya (this is for maya 5 unlimited). i'm not necessarily going to go out and buy them/ask my school to buy them, but i will start looking, so when the time comes to maybe get one i can make the right decision. :)

Well for the rotating gizmo prob...You can also use the regular move, rotate, and scale tools to move along with/or use the channel box for those movements.
I think that the Extrude gizmo is based on the poly normals.....or something like that....

EDIT: Well I was wrong about that..:hmm:

Well maybe someone else can clue us in....

To extrude the face align to it`s edge, click on that little "upper gizmo" (Little esquare with a cricle around) on the end of the tool. that`ll make the face been extruded perfectly aligned...

For the soft selection (i miss it from my 3Dsmax days too) you can search something on highend3d! I think i heard something about a "magnetic tool"of some kind, but i might missheard it...
Hopes we get more replys for that!
