Project 1: Normal tests. Tests in lighting and sample rate.

Project 2: Heightened tests. Tests with Alpha, multipied settings and the last one is fog.

cool...this is what i was talking about...top job.
how about more tests...more results...more pics..
offset?
sample type?
stocastic/gausian/shadow? huh.
do you use it in more than one channel?
etc
either way..if you post files...we could all come up with a set of results based around the same file which could be useful...then post results.:beer:
Kotayus : nice work...bud...thanks for taking the initiative..:thumbsup:

Kotayus
05-17-2003, 10:37 PM
well there wasnt a whole lot to it.
MATERIAL:
Color= orange.
Luminance: Texture=Chanlum
Mix= Multiply.
Chanlum Settings:
Samples=64
Initial Offset=1.5
Sample Radius=20
Sample Type=Area (gausian and shadows checked)
Transparency: Texture=Fresnel
Mix= Multiply.
That was all.
the others, i was just messing around.
Fling, Check PM's

With Chanlum shaders:

Without:

if you want chanlum to work, all lights must have shadows enabled for the chanlum object, otherwise it will appear white as in the top right hand image.
chanlum is nearly always just put in the luminosity channel, though you can get good results in the bump channel or at least intersting results.

just out of curiousity what effect are you trying to come up with. other than the sphere, I don't see what the effect is your trying to achieve.
Heres my recent test on a SSS effect.

Sweet, kotayus can't you just post a zip file?
I mean you have the web space I know.

slightly offtopic but speaking of SSS you might have a look at manni1979s SSS-Fake without any plugins: http://www.isis.de/members/~cisenburg/presets.html
It's in german but rather self-explanatory i think :)

really cool Kotayus. I tested Chanlum on different characters. Mostly use it for skin. Seen some strange behavior when using it with radiosity in the scene allthough i kept my shadow casting light in. Just added the HDR Spheres and received many strange reflections on the skin shader.
Anyone knows how to get rid of this?

nope...can you post a pic of this problem please.
cos last night messing about i was getting strange ridges at the edge of light contact on surface...would like to see what you mean...unfortunately i didn't keep my tests from last night so i can't actually show you what i mean...but the answer to your problem my affect mine...:thumbsup:

hmm only thing I ever did chanlum with radiosity was old moose renders, don't seem to remember issues but would like to see what the errors look ike. Chanlum is great for things like Velvet and skin, for dep SSS effects like mine you really need to stick with Translucent, especially since it works with transperecy with far more control the banj.

Kai, i can see where it the question would be: "What are you trying to accomplish?"
And the answer is: Im trying to understand HOW it works. I also can see what you mean, If i want to understand it i should understand how the light would react in the real world, but i am just on a quest to understand the plugin a little better. I hope you take no offense to this, as i completly respect you and your opnions, but just because its a SSS simulating plugin...doesnt mean thats all it can be used for...i think its a nice effect either way :thumbsup:

ahh I wasn't talking about how real SSS works I"m talking learn how chanlum or any shader for that matter works. and chanlum is only good for one SSS effects, and thats light surface stuff like sking and maybe extremely hard marble.
basically what the shader does is wrap a little of the light around the object according to its offset that you put in. so an offset of 8 will basically extend the illumination around the object about 8m.

can anybody give me an example of settings they used for various object like:
1) peach fuzz, velvet
2) leather
i mean these are clearly different effects, and understanding how you would go about simulating there effect would be useful...because i could then expand from that point..and begin experimenting with more success.

Hi, I am triying to do sugar texture (white sugar), do you think Chanlum could help or anything else ?
My result so far is not very realistic.

The image i was talking about. Where do these reflections come from? If i exclude the chanlum channel there are no reflections.
