View Full Version : LookAt Constraint only on Z axis
CGTrader 05-17-2003, 05:25 PM Hello,
I have a 2d plane with tree texture on it and want to make that the plane should always look at the camera. But I want it should be constrained only on Z axis, that is when camera moves the plane rotates only on Z axis (world), and X and Y remains untouched. LookAt cant be applied only on one axis :thumbsdow
Is there any sollution? I have made it to work with expressions but they are very inconvenient to me.
Thanks

Here you will find a plugin called "Billboard". I think that it will help you.

put a dummy at the center of your tree, affect the lookat on the dummy, and link Z rotation of the tree on the dummy (in link pannel, uncheck x and y)

You could also set it u so that your look at node is your up node and your up node is your look at node. Just set the up look at to your Z axis, and don't move the up node. Hope that made sense.

thanks, guys for yours replies :)
martinc: I tried to play with lookAt controller options, but could not make it work the way I want
because I have many looking objects (trees and bushes) I have made they all are instances looking to a dummy that is linked to the camera and move inheritance for the dummy on Z axis is turned off.

Had the same problem. Tried the billboard plugin aswell, didn't get it right..
But there seems to be new controller with MAX7, it worked great!! it's called "Flat People", put it on the TOP Transform, not the Rotation controller...
Worked fine with me, let's you define which axis you want to floow the lookat target...

put a dummy at the center of your tree, affect the lookat on the dummy, and link Z rotation of the tree on the dummy (in link pannel, uncheck x and y)

This is the easiest way to do it IMO. It takes very little time and requires no axis setup in "Look At", because the direction of the dummy doesn't matter.
Good call KiboOst
