A lot of people might already know this but I have run into a lot of folks that have troulbe modeling Sub-D's in Maya. This little technique really helps me model.
Usually I start with a Polygon Box but for this show I am using a finished Poly model.

Duplicate the object making a Instance of your original.

Use the Hot box or Menu's and go to
MODIFY >> CONVERT >> POLYGONS TO SUBDIV Option Box

In the Convert to SubD options, turn on Proxy Object.

With the Sub-D object still selected Hit CTRL-A to get the Attributes panel.
On your PolyToSubD TAB change the display to ENABLE OVERRIDE. It's under DISPLAY, DRAWING OVERRIDES.

Last of all select your Polyobject tab turn on ENABLE OVERRIDE again and change the "Level of Detail" to BOUNDING BOX. The bounding box still gets in teh way but it's better then the default poly proxy Object.

Now you have a poly object that can be modeled and you see the Sub-D results at the same time. Set up a simple MEL button to toggle hiding the objects. Which makes it more like SoftImage or Lightwave. I like having both up at the same time when I model but you can really kill your FPS.

Hope that helps someone out there.
