great model with awesome details. i wonder, is it supposed to be a full-size train or a toy / model train? (you mentioned your references were of a model). also, the top / back seems a little too clean / shiney, especially compared to the closeups you gave of the front, which are great. anyway, spectacular work.

Oddly enough it seems (at least to me) that the no-texture render is most pleasing to the eye. I feel that it showcases the model the best (which is brilliant by the way) despite the well-done textures in your final image. Maybe it's the lighting in the textured render. Anyway, either way the model is fantastic!

I agree the model/texturing is excellent. But the final renders are lacking. They are not doing justice to a great model.

Thank you all very much for your replies!
I'm really glad you like the model.
So, to clear some things up, I have to say that this model is meant to go in a scene, where it won't even be the subject, so I've already gone overboard with the details, but I just couldn't help it. The more I worked on it the better it got and I couldn't stop it :)
In the scene the locomotive will be a toy. Hence the plastic casing for the bodywork in the back, hence it being so shiny. While texturing I remembered an old model train I had which was made out of wood, plastic and metal and it looked very realistic. It was heavy and had more of a scale model look to it(although it was electrical) then of a toy so I thought it would be ok to make this one a toy but with realistic mnaterials.
*blenditall - indeed the lighting settings are different in that one. That's why I posted all of the images because they had a different feel to them so that everybody would find an image they liked best.
*Bubbaloo - you've caught me! I modelled the tran at my work place between work projects. When I was in the final stages of texturing and was getting ready to render it a new project came in and I had to work on them in paralel. I did have a scene which included pebles between the tracks but it kep crashing my pc (q6600 @ 3400 & 4GB DDR2 @ 1096 - 5 5 5 18) so I had to abandon it.
The model not having a real scene wasn't to big of a crim though because it will be featured in a full scene later on.
Again, thank you very much for your comments and I hope to hear...well, see, more!
