Definitely! Of course, this will depend on what area of Maya you focus on...

I've seen (and tried) it at a collegue's place and, personally, I found no reason to upgrade. Especially since I don't use Mental Ray, otherwise I might feel different.
PaintFX to poly could be nice, but alas the polycount is so high that I find it quite useless.

Anyway, my main gripe is that, once again, the older plug-ins don't work. Sure, I can wait for everyone and their mom to recompile them, but that's just not the way it's supposed to work...

There is a PFX mesh quality window which collects attrs that have impact on polycount.

You can output it as quads and/or set the limit for polygons.

You can also use new poly reduction tool on meshes created from PFX. It works great.

...tested it on trees...great results.

EXACTLY! and well summised....
Just as the recent algorithm introduced into m4.0(?) for displacements speeded things up no end, so does the much more cofigurable 'reduce poly' option box ---> a welcome and long overdue(!) addition..

P.S. also works wonders for distance ---> terrain management and history --> sub_D's....

For the projects I work on, the DWG import is really a blessing! It even respects the original AutoCAD layers.
The intergration of the renderers (Maya, MR, Vector) is also very handy.

Do you need the features that have been added or upgraded? If not, then it isn't worth it...

i think you can change if you have de same or beter in maya 5 but if you have scenes withs plugins you must think a lot of because the maya pluginīs incompatibility between versions can be a problem.
