Hey guys! just looking for any advice for a desktop that will smoothly run Maya, Photoshop, and other such CG apps. I'm looking to spend about $800. Really have no knowledge of desktops, so anyone who has any experience with them I'd love to hear your recommendation! OR even if you don't have much experience with desktops just throw in your 2 cents :)

Thanks!

Nate

Depends on what you mean by smoothly running.
I have lately switched to a new IntelQuadCore system for better render and simulation performance.(and because such systems are quite affordable at the moment)
But before I used a Athlon64 3000+ and working in Maya and ZBrush was ok. I did that for years.
But what I had was 2GB of RAM and that really helps me a lot and is absolute mandatory.
The graphics card was a simple GeForce6600, really no probs with that.

So normally I would recommend you an Intel Core2Quad system but don't know if you can get that for $800 in your country. But I think an Intel Core2Duo might be ok for your needs now or you try saving more money to get a quad and be safe for the future.
I would take at least 2GB RAM (it's cheap today) but more than 4GB makes no sense.
Get a large and fast harddisk. You will need that space.
And for the graphic card, I recommend NVidia, generally runs smoother with Maya
