Hi,

For those that have been relentlessly stalking and harrassing me, and for those who haven't, my next Mental Ray tutorial is finished. It's on Final Gathering.

Tell me if it sucks!

http://www.geocities.com/jozvex/tutorials/fg.html

I know there are already good FG tutorials out there but.....so what hehe.

-------EDIT----------

If the site is unaccesible, go here:

In Maya 5 there is a button in the render globals to turn on or off the deafult light :)

Hey that would be cool!

Darn free Geocities hehe. At least I know people are looking at the tutorial!

Oh and Kabab, yeah there's a button for that in Maya 4.5 too but I just find it easier using a "non light". I have a shelf button that creates one.

Thanks for the comments guys! :wavey:

I think in 5 now the default light is off by default now..

'doh - I really should have read down in the thread before e-mailing you earlier - offering hosting space on my server...

Ah well.... The offer does still stand if you want it (http://jozvex.vfxtalk.com ;))

Anyway.... love the tut(s) - gonna run through the Final Gathering one now - need to get more into Mental Ray....

Could be, my 4.5 preferences have probably turned them back on when I installed 5 or something. Either way, my tuts aren't just for Maya 5, so I have to include the light thing anyway. Otherwise I'll get emails saying "where's the option to turn off the default light?" and "since doing your tutorial my scene is always dark!".

Hehe. I post on 3DBuzz, CGTalk, Highend3D, 3D-Palace and occasionally on the new CGChannel Forums. Oh and sometimes on Simply Maya too! I'm everywhere!!!

Of course if someone would hire me..... I wouldn't have so much free time!

And thanks Hugh! That's a great offer! I'm going to look into get my own site going soon hopefully. Maybe Jozvex.com??? But I'll most definitely keep the offer in mind!

So now the question is, which tutorial should I do next?

GI?
Caustics?
HDRI?
Glossy reflections?
Or something completely different? Maybe even requested?

The offer for space is certainly still open if you've got your own domain - to be honest, that would be easier for us!

Have e-mailed you with a couple of comments.....

Oh, and I vote for caustics next...

glossy reflections would be nice, and if you could find a quick way of rendering it thatd be even better! the scripts ive tried havent worked. mental ray is definately cool.

The Default Light can be turned off in Render Globals (both Maya 5 and 4.5).

Jozvex
05-22-2003, 06:30 AM
Yeah, I just went with the "non-light" approach because there's less "open that section" etc. Everyone knows how to make lights, so there's less to get confused about.

I get emails from some people asking super basic questions, which is fine, but if I can get them the whole way there in the tutorial it's better.

Oh Oh, can you do a FG/GI combo tutorial as well? That would be really nice!

I like to see that too. I know you can get more speed and nicer look by mixing them properly, Also if you are baking textures, GI helps get around a nasty problem with FG having some missing parts of the maps.

Perhaps more sense of how that works could be made in a tutorial.

Ok, well when I do my GI tutorial I'll make sure to add a section on how Final Gathering can improve the quality and speed. Same with the Caustics tutorial.

Thanks guys! I'm so glad people are finding my efforts usefull!!

Jozvex and others.
Instead of creating a light and setting its intensity to 0.

Just open up render globals>render options

Then uncheck the enable default light setting.

simple.

Jozvex
05-27-2003, 08:47 AM
I know!!!! :scream: :surprised :scream:

Hehe sorry kag122, it's just that you're the third person in this thread to say that, and I've explained twice what my reasoning is. Not to mention the people on 3D Buzz too!

I'll go and update the tut right now with a side note about why I did it that way.

And just because the screaming smiley is so cute, here it is again:
