View Full Version : I need some help :)

Hi there,
even though I have a lot of work on the nemean lion, I started a new painting today (it should be finished faster), but I have a problem now :) well, it's a kind of samurai - more from my fantasy than from history - and a few moments ago, I got an idea to give him a mask.. I have two types of the mask and also the picture without it.. I maybe prefer the face on the left, but my boyfriend says he like it without mask more - and now I just can't decide what to do..

So, what do you think? Which possibility is the best?

(this is about 50% smaller than the original and it's also only a part of it.. I don't want to show the whole picture yet, hope you understand :))

Mask on the left works better for me. Nice textures on the metal as well.

I agree if you choose to make a mask it should be the mask on the left... BUT

with no mask you can show more emotion on the face which is an important thing if you want to tell a story with your painting.

On another note I do think the face seems like a different angle as the helmet so maybe you want to check your perspective.

Nice going!

Thanks to both of you for the replies ;) I was thinking a lot about it and I suddenly got an idea to create two pictures (without and later also with the mask) that will be different in some details and also in the mood of the whole painting.. There is something what you don't see in this smaller picture and it will hopefully make a good point - if everything works as I want it to :)

I'm going to continue, you'll see some results soon..

And thanks for the perspective - I knew about it, but was too lazy to think about the fact that other people will also see that mistake.. I'll fix it immediately :)

I worked a little on the samurai and now I have another problem :)

I fixed the perspective of the helmet (hope it works better now) - don't worry about the strange orange lines, they're just for help and I'll clear them soon.. I'm going to make the face more realistic and also to darken the helmet and make it look more oval at the back.

I tried to do something with the metal parts, but because I'm new in all these techniques, I'm not sure which one is the best.. I was a little fascinated by the 'dodge tool' so maybe I used it more than it was necessary :) it should be a kind of old looking but trim solid metal with some shiny facets and scratches and the whole scene is situated in a dark place with some light coming (most likely) from the sword he's holding..but it mustn't be the only source of light, because I want something to be seen..well, it's not a strict realistic painting, but it could look a little more real..

If you have any other idea, I'll be glad.. I'm still not satisfied with the things I do and I'm still learning..

ajinak - If you have time could you explain how you achieved the metalic effect of the helmet please?

I must admit the process of creating it was rather strange :) About a week ago I was learning how to make my own brushes and yesterday I was showing my father what I've learn (putting all the brush strokes on the canvas, changing the opacity and so on and finally I looked at it, said: 'wow, it works' and saved it..

So the texture came from my experiments and it surprisingly turned to be very usefull :) This time I only finished it by creating the shadows and than light with a dodge tool

The first tutorial about this which inspired me a lot was this (by Linda Bergkvist), so if you want look at it.. http://www.furiae.com/index.php?view=gallery (>tutorials>textured brushes)

Thanks!!!, I'll look at the tutorial...

Oh, I've just accidentaly turned him into some European, but don't worry about that - I'll fix it tomorrow.. I tried to make some details - actually the smallest I've ever created until now..

If you have some tips how to make the face look more realistic, I'll be grateful ;)

and 100% closeup.. maybe I should keep this face for some medieval warrior :arteest: ...

Well for a more realistic look you need a little more realistig shading which means a few things...

First I would go with a bit harsher lighting that clearly comes from one or maybe two directions.

Second you can use some colour differences in the face... some parts are redder than others and some parts could even be considered green or blue (load a photo and maximize the contrast that'll show you where what colours is)

Third and most important the skin reacts kinda strange with lights that is because it is partly see through and has a lot of layers which means there is a very soft wax effect (that is why they use wax statues in Madame Tusseau's) So to get there I would suggest to find a photo with your favourite actor... or maybe even a guy who looks like the face you have painted and try to simulate the way the light reacts.(this'll show you there are almost never white highlights, and if there are they are very small pinpoints) It is really a matter of seeing and recreating... and with time you'll do it automatically.

I hope that helps you get better.

And BTW don't forget to make the eyes reflective and shiny and wet... that makes a huge difference.

Good luck finding some great reference... and show us what you came up with.

Thanks a lot, matsman.. this was the kind of advice I was looking for!

I hope I'll have time enough - I have an exam today and I'm sometimes starting to be nervous if I can't work on the picture.. It' a big deal for me to do it as good as I can..

Before digital painting I have always been drawing people, but now I'm just finding new possibilities and sometimes forgetting the old - like making a light on the face.. hope I'll get into it again and fix all the droughts :arteest:

Just a small update to prove that I'm still working on :) I've reworked the face many times, once it was more realistic (even the light worked well), but I somehow realized that the mood got totally lost and I went back to where I was before.. maybe just for now

Instead of that I kept working on the helmet and some details.. a few closeups, if you want to look..

Hope in the evening there will be more to show :arteest:

Nice work on the braided rope!

keep it up

Tymotzues: thanks..

I focused on eyes this time and it was really exhausting.. I reworked them many times and maybe I'll even do that again in the future, but not today :) I have still a lot of things to do.. armour, top of the helmet, the sword and the night sky..

Some eyes.. look almost the same, but not for me :D

Once he had even those, but they just didn't fit to the rest of the picture and the mood I wanted..

Finally I've chosen the first, but he's definitely no more from Japan.. well, I must think up some amazing story to vindicate it :arteest: (UPDATE: I've just realized that the eyes are still the most weak place of the picture.. I wonder if I can paint them quickly and right one day..)

The braided rope will be a little darker on the edges.. and I know - the eyes still should be more wet..

What an idea in the middle of the night!:lightbulb

If I'm not able to paint the face properly, why not make it dissapear..
(first 'full' view of the picture)

It's strange.. somehow it works now..

I don't now what I'll think up tomorrow (maybe I'll just do two versions), but I'm just curious - has something like this ever happen to you? That you've been working on something pretty long time and suddenly you realized that maybe it was all worthless? :arteest:

UPDATE: and now something quick dedicated to one of my favourite painters, Salvator Dalí.. a little surreal, isn't it? :)

Here is the latest version of my samurai.. I'm going to work on the armour and the sword now.. and I'm looking forward to working on the small dragon on the helmet - he'll be a bit more alive :)

But the most I'm looking forward to finishing it, it's been a long time since I've started and I'm starting to be a little impatient :arteest:

05-19-2008, 08:29 PM
Mmm hate to say it, but I think your perspective may have slipped a little again with the top of the helmet..

You're right, I haven't noticed that :) But I think it should be easy to fix, just to move the dragon a little forward and decrease the back of the helmet.. at least I hope so.. thanks for that! I've always been saying that I'm slowly going blind :)

I worked a bit on the armour and now I'm going to do the sword.. Later I'll revise the details and maybe add some texture like on the helmet, but not as much.. the silver decorating reminds me of an icing, or some sweets :) sorry to them who'd like to see a historical replica, but as I've read all of these samurai armours were unique.. so this is my unique piece :)

I'm thinking of making a glimpse of some sleeves under the armour, but I don't know if that's necessary..

Katana is almost finished!

I have a small question - if there's someone who can read japanese, could you please tell me if the symbol is made properly and really means what I think it means? :) It should be "ronin" - I've thought a lot what word could be on the sword and this one just seems to me that it's telling the same story I wanted to tell with this painting.. (even though the main topic was "master shogun", it's for a small czech contest)

Let's go to work on the dragon :arteest:hopefully he will be done before midnight..

05-21-2008, 07:11 PM
The latest version I'm working on right now... finally I'm satisfied with expression of the dragon and I'm going to paint some light and details on him..

Apologize for the messy background :) I'll clean it later..
(well, I've just realized I didn't also apologize for my english..it's hard to think whether use 'the' or 'a' and so on..sometimes it should be difficult to understand my thoughts .. )

I'm sorry that I'll take more place, but I've decided to create a new thread with a better title.. I feel ashamed every time I see this "I need some help" :) "Ronin wip" will be much better..

So please don't reply here, I'll put a link here as soon as new thread is created..

There's still a lot of work to do, so I think it will be better to find it under a proper title ;)
