same old same old - nicey-nice blandness at it's finest. not that i can do better. but i do think there are some much better, more modern designs out there...

What are some examples of what you see as "better" designs? I'm just curious because I've always loved this style and thought there is nothing that tops this sort of stuff.

I think there are a ton of areas to explore for cool styles that haven't been done.

Oh and don't forget my boy Manu Martin working on this great series for a friend of mine. :)

There are a ton of great styles out there that would be interesting to see.

Those are all very nice styles, but some of these need to be able to be done in 3D (in Pixar's case), so essentially, they would end up losing some of those smaller quirks that makes those styles unique (personally, I've always been a huge fan of Cheeks and Joe Madureira). As for the Disney designs, I really like them.

I think they may be trying to give people that old school feeling, instead of doing something "groundbreaking" in terms of style right now. It's a good idea because as of right now, they haven't been establishing a good track record as of late. Something that gives people a sense of nostalgia could really work for them right now, I think.

@ llive - you get me!.. those are great designs and some i haven't actually seen.

I also think there's opportunity to go even more abstract: they're quite old now, but i think the powerpuff girls are one the best examples of character design i've seen in the past 10/20 years. All of genddy T's & craig mckraken's stuff (or at least the people they would now direct) designs are fantastic.

I also thought the style for the film 'Igor' looked nice - very simple and clear. quite refreshing not to have a million things going on.

Have a look at the pictoplasma site too. it's a huge collection of contemporary character design:

There are a million routes to explore but pixar are are big offenders for going down the safe route (i doubt you'll like that statement pixarman.) I sometimes think the CG community are guilty of not looking outside of their field for inspiration.

The character styles look like traditional Disney work (not that's it bad... just the same thing).

I've always liked the Disney style. I also like VERY much those other styles posted by Ilive, more particularly those of Joe Madureira, J Scott Campbell, Chris Bachalo, Ed McGuinness, the late Mike Wieringo, and Scottie Young. That the movie industry doesn't adopt and or embrace it is to their and our loss.
