View Full Version : Jason Ryan Animation - The Site Is officially LIVE!

Hey Everyone,
I've just recently come across a great guy & animator over at the 11 Second Club (http://www.11secondclub.com/) forums, Jason Ryan. Some of you might have heard of him, many have at least seen some of his work (Chicken Little, Disney's Dinosaur, Fantasia). He was one of the first crew of mentors at Animation Mentor, and is currently a Supervising Animator at Dreamworks, where he's working on the film: Monsters versus Aliens.
His site has recently gone live where he has produced some amazing tutorials for a very reasonal price. I've only gone through the free Ramp Up videos (also available on the site) and have already learned a great deal. What's more, he's teaching the principles of animation, so though he's using Maya in the tutorials, you can apply the principlas to other 3D apps. I'm most familiar with LightWave 3D & just downloaded the free PLE of Maya to follow along.
So anyone looking for a great resource on animation/character animation, from someone in the industry, I think needs to give this a serious look... There is more information on his site (bio, tutorial examples, etc.): http://www.jasonryananimation.com/

I can't recommend Jason's tutorials enough. He was one of the best mentors at AM and his teaching method is second to none. Anyone who is interested in getting better at animation should check out these tutorials.

I would definately recommend all of them.. it's i think the only chance you see an animator with his experience animate on the screen shots from basic to advanced acting shots :)
go Jason! :D

i'm having fun just watching his buttons move as i mouse over them :D
definitely going to favorite this for later (though, $40 for an 1.5 hrs seems a bit steep considering most training dvds cost between $50-60 and have substantially more)

I'm with Sheep, I can't think of many training DVD's that cover character animation as well as these do. Becomes even more apparent as you get in to the intermediate and advanced ones, though I would highly recommend the beginners tutes.
Jason was my mentor in the 3rd quarter and these really bring me back to those weekly Q&A's and how in depth he was. Watching him walk through a shot in 2d in Flipbook from start to finish, except in these tutorials, he then takes it in to Maya. Great stuff!

it was up last night, i am guessing to many people went to look at the site:)
Looks amazing though, the $$ of the training is nothing, just because other DVDs have "more" does not mean that any of that stuff is of use. the free tutorials Jason is giving away cover more than most other training dvds on animation and better from what I have seen so far.
To learn to be a great animator you have a few choices- for cost of your time and life-
struggle trying to learn on your own...books and doing it.
Go to school some where in person (you should do this if you can anyway for other reasons)
Join AM for a lot more than this training costs (again totally worth it for those that can)
Sign up for Keith Lango vtm service, a great set of training as well, and the ome of that money also goes to help out people that need it.
Each one is different but of amazing value since the days of apprenticeship's under master animators are things of the past. It still takes lots and lots of practice to be good what ever path you take and its very easy to get the wrong traning and have to work even harder later to make up for it when you need to be working.
Looks amazing, I am happy to see more training at this level avaible and I hope it does well for him.

Here is a qoute from the 11 second club that Jason posted about his site.
Hi guys,
The host company server is down right now for JRA. It's totally unrelated to the site.
They know this is a critical issue.
If you can spread the word that would be great.!
Thanks.....J
and then he posted today....
And we're back, phew.
They told me that someone was hitting their servers with a massive amount of spam,
so they issued a "DOS" (denial of service) to that particular server, which we are o.
They assured me that it doesn't happen very often and It's there to protect us.
Sorry for the inconvenience......let me know if you run into any issues.
All the best....J

definitely going to favorite this for later (though, $40 for an 1.5 hrs seems a bit steep considering most training dvds cost between $50-60 and have substantially more)I understand what you're saying in regards to other training dvds, but I think you're comparing apples & oranges. I don't believe you'll get the type of content that's available in Jason's training. I think it's the difference between reading a book on animation from a top notch animator, versus sitting over the shoulder of a top notch animator and actually watching them work, having them explain what they are doing, their workflow, etc.
Now I understand the analogy falls a little short because what we're comparing are like mediums (i.e. both video training), but my analogy & point is you aren't going to get the same amount of content & information in one versus the other. And I think that's why for the price, to get that kind of training from someone who's been in the industry for awhile, trusted enough to be in charge of other animtors at one of the largest animation companies in the world (ie. Supervising Animator at Dreamworks), it's a deal!

Not that the dvd is not worth it. I'm sure it is. He is a great animator. :) In fact I am getting more training videos and this will be one of them.

To everybody out othere that has a little bit of doubt about Jason's tutorials I have one thing to say, it is the BEST value for money I have ever spent!
I encourage everyone to check it out, it's not often that you get to see a pro animator working on 18 shots from start to finish.
It's definitly worth checking out.
