Ive been using vray since it came out, and for some reason i never bothered to learn about storing the irradiance maps then reassigning them to the final render thing! I've always just rendered with an irradiance map setting of medium or sometimes high animation (which are the serttings in the more recent version, so im finally willing to learn!! anybody give me a fools guide as to why i should do it the other way.

The other thing is ive been using vray dirt alot recently and have noticed that it seems to crawl around on my animations like a procedual would do if not mapped properly anyone know how to stop this?

thanks

example of vray work to show you im not a complete idiot!!

If you used cached irradiance maps you get a few benefits - For one it's far faster since you're only calculating a map every 10 frames (as an example) than every frame. Second it wont flicker since it's not changing the positiohn of the samples each frame. Third if you store your area light shadows you'll be able to skip the expensive raytracing stage that they do each frame.

One the bad side, you can only really do this for camera fly arounds in a static environment - if an object moves the cache won't be correct. If you've got animated objects in a scene you're best off either using brute force and light cache in single frame mode or alternativ ely split the render so you do the static environment with animated objects hidden as one render with irmaps cached and a second render for the animated objects with the static objects as matte objects using brute force and light cache - bit messier admittedly but it's the best blend of speed and quality.

Vray dirt shouldn't need to be mapped either but since it's raytraced you might need higher sampling so it doesn't fizz.
