View Full Version : Rotating viewport maya's way
bonjavi 05-12-2008, 08:52 AM Hi,
I'm trying to change my keys to work like they do on maya but I have a problem with the ctrl and cmmd keys. I'm used to rotate with alt key in windows but now I'm working on macosx and if command key would work as the alt key there won't be any problem at all. I know that I can change on keyboard preferences on macos this keys but I wanna be able to go on using macs usual shortcuts, I mean not changing all system shortcuts.
I've found an option on cinema4d to change cmmd for control keys, then I've modified on the command manager the camera controls (move, rotate and scale). And it should be ok now, but since for rotating over camera's own axis is done pressing ctrl, and now I use that key cause I changed it with cmmd (I press control when pressing commd with that change) now when I rotate I can only rotate on that cinema4d way, over camera axis.
So my question is just about that mode of rotation, I can't find it on command manager. It can't be changed its shortcut?
Thanks,
JAvi

as a default cinema does use the maya navigation (although on the mac side of things the alt key is sometimes labelled the option key).
is there any compelling reason for you not to use alt/option?
cheers, simon w.

Just because I'm used to maya controls on windows (with pc keyboard). On macosx the command key works also for navigating like with the alt-option one, and on bootcamp I have they remaped so it works like in a common PC keyboard.
I was just trying to change that control but don't get why it doesn't have any name on the command manager, that's all.

You can modify/add the shortcuts from the Command Manager.

a student of mine who was trying to get the rotate behaviour to be more like XSI (where the viewport's rotate-centre is the centre of the viewport not the selected object) found that hitting the INS key made the C4D viewport rotate around wherever the mouse was at this time. It was new to me anyway!

Rotating around the view center can be done by going to your preferences and under document changing the camera rotation to "Center", the camera object itself has further rotation options within in (viewport camera is got from just going to "Camera" mode in the AM).

The only issue I had coming from Maya was needing to tick the 'reverse orbit' in the C4D prefs so it orbited the same as Maya rather than reversed.

Hi,
bunter: I guess we don't have ins key on mac (we have?), but that sounds cool I will try it on windows
c.smith:I knew the reverse orbit thats the first thing I noticed first time I tried c4d a couple years ago, I found it on a post about migrating from maya to c4d, but these days I haven't found it anymore, do you have any guide or something about maya to c4d? I've found a very usefull shortcuts conversion guide from alias, I don't think it's update but it's ok
Per-Anders: I know that I can add or modify shortcuts on command manager, do you know the name of the command I'm asking about (rotating about camera axis by adding ctrl to the rotation combo)
Thanks!

Ah, Now I feel silly. Surely the logical place to put this would be under the viewport menu rather than in document?
I can't find the command that goes with the INS key on my mac. Anyone know what its called?

Hi bunter,
the command is called "set camera pivot".
I like this function very much!

hi, i'm on a mac too. I set the 'set camera pivot' key to be F1 instead of ins, but it doesn't seem to be rotating the camera on the centre of my perspective view, i'm i missing something obvious?

I always have trouble when trying to set the camera pivot if I'm zoomed in to close to an object. And, for some reason, the pivot point won't display at all. Now, I just use view center as my default.
