View Full Version : _proconpictures: shapes
proconpictures 05-10-2008, 09:20 PM this matte painting was my last personal work before i started working as digital matte artist full-time at a studio in london. i thought i'd post it because camera projection mapping seems to finally get the attention it deserves. the different layers of the psd were projected onto geometry in maya and a life action dude was composited in. you can take a look at the shot here:

and find a breakdown included on my last reel over at www.proconpictures.com

This is good.
Feels like it need one more color. Doesn`t have to be big, just something to satisfy the eye.
You can have it as small lights or fires lost in the scenery, it would help increase the feeling of desolation.
Also, the middleground portion of grassy rolling hills is still too obviously a photo and needs to blend more with the foreground and background. Try adding some of the rocky elements of the foreground.
Adding something on the very-foreground on the left might help the flow of the image.
A burned tree stump, termite structure, twisted metal, rock formation etc.

hi dude,
I am not an expert but I think that the edges of the mountains far away are too defined, also, in the still, is too contrasted, in the quicktime it looks better to me, also i think that the background mountains looks to sitilized compared to the real elements you are using,
cheers,
Juan

Nice work! I like the shot with the guy in, makes the image solid and the elements nicely blended into one. The image itself gives a certain mood, but hard to fit it somewhere without the guy composited in :) so all in all, i like it!

Hey guys, thanks for your honest opinions and help.
Marco, thank you. I wish you would be my Art Director. Or at least colleague. You made some good points and very awesome suggestions. I guess my view got narrowed down too much while working on it.
Juan, yes man, I see your point. The composited version is a lot more believable in the end. And as for the style, when I look at it today, I wish there would be something in the MG to bind it all together. Thanks for the pointers.
Dave. Am glad you like it but it's by far not good. I usually don't do too much fantasy stuff but we all get inspired by the movies we watch and I must have gotten carried away a bit. I'm Matte Painter at a small studio in London. I wish it'd be in Soho but it's in Belsize, Zone 2. No major titles to show off with and I don't get to work on any grant movies right now either. But I believe it's better than locking myself up at home and only doing whatever I feel like. When you have the influence of more people working on the same thing, you tend to be able to evolve in some ways.
Seema. Good point. Then I guess it's better composited than painted. It was mainly a 3D projection practise anywayz. But thanks, yo.

Dont put yourself down too much man :) with a little commerical work things will pick up pretty quick im sure. The experience you get from a real world project, no matter how small the studio will take you quite far, you tend to learn so much more on the job. you seem to be on the right path to me :)
One note, most film matte work will be very invisible, less the fantasy stuff, so crack the art of comping elements into a live plate and that'll go much further than sci-fi fantasy stuff.
Best,
Dave.

heyo milan, nice piece, i agree with marco -adding another color in but really small, can use that to create some depth n atmosphere. also it seems the foreground and midground doesnt have a smooth transition or blend, kinda gets lost in the so detailed foreground rocks n the houses below on the left side. i thin its because they both share same contrast ratio. maybe lighten the midground a bit more, like a lil fog or sth.
Awesome matte painting tho, getting better n better! !
