Maybe it takes place thousands of years after the matrix when machines have risen up and taken over again. What if the matrix is utilised in another planet across the universe? You never know, it could happen.:p

I tell you what...though I don't know what will happen in Revolutions, if the Wachowski brothers aren't careful about how they tell this story...the Matrix series could be ruined for a lot of people.
So far the Matrix has looked like it will be a huge franchise in the mold of Star Wars. But if the story ends up being crap...I could see one of the biggest franchise busts in Hollywood history.

I can't see how the Matrix Online would be a good game, given the premise. You know it's not a real world, you know you are ultimately affecting nothing, and you never leave the Matrix. What's the point?

Of course there will still be a Matrix. Remember in the first movie when Morpheus tells Neo that most people wouldn't be able to accept the reality if they woke up? Unplugging most people would kill them or drive them mad. They'll have to keep most people plugged in even after the machines are defeated. Sort of a digital nursing home or something. The online game could be about making sure bad entitys don't crop up in the Matrix. Sort of an antivirus program for the Matrix or something. Hell, I don't know, but it's an idea.

it'll be interesting to see thousands of players activate bullet time all at the same time
imagine a 15 a side map using the Max Payne Engine.
30 ppl activating bullet time all at the same time...
1 result......

If anything, bullet time would reduce percieved lag... think about it. If people are going in slow motion, there's a lower rate of fire, and the slow movement speed would negate phasing.
Anyway, I got the impression bullet time happens only between people who are fighting, and wouldn't affect a huge area.

If I were the designer, umhum, I would make bullet time work just the way it does in the movie. At random times. Everyone is on equal footing, sometimes it may work in your favor, other times.... You'll have to be quick to take advantage.
Or, to make it a more "duh" user friendly... have some type of countdown to the next "bullet time" period. That way everyone knows when.
