View Full Version : modeling a car, spline/polygon. (noob)
I got a couple of questions, first: Check this picture out my problem (http://www.mattiasbrattstrom.com/extrapoly.jpg) I followed this tutorial and shift-draged some extra polys, but I can't figure out why or how to get surface between the new polys. If someone can tell me how or point me in the right direction I'd be very happy, maybe it's so obvious it's not described anywhere. :surprised Here is the
tutorial (http://3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/fiat500/fiat500_m02.asp) btw.
Is this a bad way to model a car? I just found the spline method, is that better? I have trouble closing the splines togheter, but I have just started experimenting with it.

hey hey!! i'm doing that tutorial as well and i'm nearly finsihed. u said you were shift dragging polys, but you should only be shift dragging the edges of the polygons.
by the looks of things you either have 2 vertices floating around, or a polygon which has been somehow flipped backwards.
if your using max 5 i really suggest using Edit Poly cos its a lot more stable and fucntional than Edit MEsh.
Spline Modelling: you have to be careful with that becuase getting a surface is a pain in the ass. all the splines must be alined with any vertices you have in the spline.
so for now, delete those 2 floating vertices, grab that furthest left Edge, and shift drag. see what happens.
this tutorial requires quite a bit of knowledge already with modelling, so i dont know how far you will get. Theres some "lighter" tutorails on 3dtotal to maybe practice with first.
:D
I press shift, with the left mouse button I press and drag the blue dot. It creates another dot like the ones in my picture.
I found all tutorial to be pretty much the same, the problem is finding one that is easy to understand and doesn't skip steps.

yeah, dont shift and drag vertices, only edges. edges are the traingle icon in your subobject menu (edit mesh menu).
sometimes tutorials do skip steps, which can be a pain if your just starting out on something new. Just read em carefully and look closly at the pics.
heres an idea. www.3dbuzz.com and sign up for their free tutorial videos. they have a kick arse video about EVERYTHING you need to know about whats in the Edit Mesh , Edit Poly menus. give it a shot man, i've learned bucket loads from the 3dbuzz vids
:surprised as I suspected it would be an easy solution. Thanks for all the help. :airguitar

that might be a good idea. cos theres loads of bits you have to do yourself. the author just gives a guide of what you should do, so some beginners may find it pretty hard to know what to do.
right now, i'm doing the accesoires part, and i'm doing the lights on the car.
i'll put up a render later
