Title: The Incredible Hulk
Name: Jonas Thornqvist
Country: Sweden
Software: 3ds max, mental ray, Photoshop
With the new Hulk movie coming out I wanted to do my own version of the Hulk. It proved to be pretty hard to model something with that much mass and still keep him looking human.
That said, I had great fun making him!

Great looking!
Just 1 thing that bugs me, that is the nipple placement, somehow now they create a saggy look to the chest. As I would think of the being a bit more higher placed and outwards. That would compliment to the full chest, now it contradicts. Maybe you wanted to leave the suggestion of the small men underneath, but then maybe less shadow directly below the chest would help for keeping him looking fit.
Also the initial idea of him having a natural skin tint was more atractive as an aproach to me.
I really need to get into texturing in such detail more (incl. a new computer to be able to). But how do you for instance aproach the createn of the jeans, both mesh and texture. Could you elaborate on that? Thanks!
(now get back into creating your original characters!!! ;))

Fantastic work! I really like it. My only critic might be to lower the shoulder area by & behind the neck (area where you do shrugs), it just looks a tad to high behind the neck. But like I said, other than that, very nice work.

great, but the pants shouldn't fit this well at all. hulk was a man before his transformation.
its a nonsense that he has his button well closed for example.

Honestly, overall, I think this design and level of realism is better than the one from the upcoming Hulk movie. The face has a lot of character; the muscles and anatomy are very well rendered; and the shader kicks @$$! Also – and I feel this probably won’t get mentioned – is that even the pants are very well modeled and rendered! I’m wondering, how much is modeled, and how much is textured?
The only crit's I could offer would be I feel his pec's and shoulders are too small and somewhat flat considering the rest of his proportions (granted it's obviously a disproportional character from a man, but still). As fx81 has stated, the feet are way too boxy looking. Finally, I thought the garage environment was a lot better than a simple dark, gradient colored background. Any particular reason you abandoned that idea?
An otherwise superb job in all areas of execution!

Great work!
The muscles and over all anatomy look great. I don't think that
facial expression can be beat either.
However I do think the pectoral muscle area should curve outward
a bit more(thicker muscle with a fall off toward the center of the chest).
That may just be a personal preference though in how I see The Hulk.
Great Image http://202.3.216.21/forums.cgsociety.orgg/images/smilies/cool.gif

I would drop the trapezius muscles to the base of the earlobe. As it stands it looks like it's impossible for him to turn his head.
Otherwise, incredible.

Hey, that's great work.
Guys don't forget about Kolby Jukes's Hulk :) Only thing I dislike about this piece is the torso, it feels too rough and would look a bit better with diferent shape. Maybe tonning down the arms and expanding chest would help. (look KJ's Hulk). Face Expression and composition/rednering

Frankly, I am almost mad that this isn't the model the new movie is going to use. It's the most realistic Hulk representation we've ever seen. What I like most above all is how good the skin looks both shader-wise and bumpmaps.

I like more this version than the new movie. Your seems to much like the ILM version. Rythm and Hues are a great VFX company, but the ILM version was more near to reality, the body complexion, the aspect of the skin and all that stuff made him look real. Your has a skin that is not that bumpy like in the new movie.

05-13-2008, 02:21 AM
I've never been a monstrous fan of the Hulk (xmen guy here), however I am totally feeling this character for some reason. It just has the perfect green hue, size/proportion, and facial work. This really should be the new Hulk character in the movie.
The new Hulk for the movie, in my opinion, is the perfect example of too many hands trying to define what the Hulk should look like. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2121831936/tt0800080
Once again it seems like it's too human for my tastes. We all know the Hulk for what he appeared like in the comics and the Hulk in this thread is much more true to that realization, in my opinion.

Jonas' rendition of The Hulk is getting plenty of attention, and plenty of people are agreeing its putting the The Hulk in the new movie to shame.

Im happy that so many seem to like my version of the Hulk.

Some people have asked me about my textures, and thats about the only thing I haven't shown so far:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=128296&stc=1
These are the different textures I used, some are used in more than one shader input and the color map is used in unscatterd diffuse and epidermal. In the epidermal slot I decrese the contrast and added some more yellow to it using an output node.
http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=128295&stc=1
Since I never intended to show him from so close I put the head and upper body in the same UV space and painted my textures in 4k. Good enough for full body shots but they start to break up in my close-up renders of his face. This is a crop of my diffuse in full resolution.
http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=128294&stc=1
I also baked procedurals and other tileable images, like these waterdrops, into my UV space and used them in the various textures. Especially procedurals are very useful since you end up with a baked image without any stretching that can add details to tricky areas where the UVs might not be 100%... not that I have any such areas...
/Jonas
Jonas
05-20-2008, 10:40 PM
This is a crop of my baked procedural pore map. The crop is of the same area as my diffuse texture in my post above. As you can see it adjusts for sloppy UVs at the side of the nose etc.

Thanks for the link Skooter.
I must say though, that I think the new version of the hulk looks great, thats what got me inspired in the first place!
And the images released just keep getting better and better.
Just look at the shot in the trailer when he is running with the back towards the camera, such great attention to detail in modelling, shading and animation.
/Jonas

To Jonas, I know you posted the mesh but that looks like your smoothed mesh. Do you have a base model you could post. I'm just wondering if the detail in the neck is a bump map or if it was done in zbrush or what?
I just want more images and behind the scenes. Please

Must say, I've logged into the forums for the first time in quite some time to give respect on this. The silhouette and skin shading are seriously something special. Five stars from me...
Really curious about your workflow to burn the water drops into your UV space -- the sweat and oiliness of the skin look so alive... actually thought it was a modded version of mi_sss until I read your WIP (I guess technically the miss_fast_skin++ IS modded, but not that much...)
Alas, I too wish this was the model for the new film. I strongly disliked the Ang Lee version, and I like the new film version even less. It might move correctly, but it's not the character that I know.
Peace,

When you bake your tileable textures do you have a method of avoiding the seams jonas? when baking procedurals it is seamless, but with a character already unwrapped tileable textures still show where my characters uvs are. just wondering if you had a work around or what you do exactly.
I like it very much ,good job!

With the new Hulk movie coming out I wanted to do my own version of the Hulk. It proved to be pretty hard to model something with that much mass and still keep him looking human.
That said, I had great fun making him!

wonderful work jonas. there have been many 3d versions of the hulk, but this, i think beats most of them!
Most meaning all of them :D. I have just one thing to point out, his waist should be bigger in proportion to the arms, like in the comic books, but all in all I would give you 6 stars, but there are only 5 :D

I really like your version of the hulk more so than the movies version; Especially when it comes to the minor detail like the veins and the richness of the colors on his skin. Unlike the movie not so much craziness with displacements set very high, very little by just enough. I like the green skin over the grey/green one on film and the subsurface scatter on the texture looks great.
I really had high hopes for the hulk model on film. I mean I saw to many problems, I watched the movie twice; First time for enjoyment, second to analyze it and enjoy it again :p -can't bet the big screen.
Don't get me wrong the model came out great, but not excellent like I expected it... especially with the millions of dollars involved in the budget and the technology we have today the model and textures should have came out better.
I dislike your version of hair, I much prefer the movies version. But other than that I like this version a lot when it comes to the skin and texturing involved. I like the face from the movie a little more. But your face is death on when compared to the older comics of hulk.
Amazing job out of 5 - 4.5 (Certain things like the gun and jeans texturing very CG to me it isn't believable. Also modeling wise the muscle are awesome, I really dislike the feet and hands they are far to similar making it perfect is a sense, like the toes. Well its hard to fool someone who's in the field...lol :D)

I liked some features of the Hulk in the first movie and some of the features from the second movie. I think both came a little short as to the vision I have in my head of the Hulk. The first one had too much of a baby face, the second was a little too thin-skinned and too chiseled in the face. YOURS is like 99% there. Your 2nd version's hair is definitely better.
The only thing that bothers me about your is what has bothered me in just about every incarnation of the Hulk: the pants.
Let's say that somehow JEANS actually survived his expansion, they would be to TIGHT on him you'd see bulging. I would have liked to see some warmups on him better than jeans. In my mind, warmups/tracksuit are really the only kind of bottoms that would be able to withstand the transformation.
Like I said, 99% on target in my mind.
