Hi to all. I’m working, with my small crew, on a new 3D short film. I’m Italian then maybe I could have problem to explain some concepts... pls forgive me J.
This is an indipendent and auto produced project, the first purpose is to push our 3D skills to a high level…
Ok, this is the simple idea: A French artist, in a public park (Montmartre/Paris), prepare his canvas and start to paint. A little crowd admire his work until another artist sits in front of the first and prepare another canvas… the competition begins.
The first character is a good painter but is very arrogant and irritable, he think to be the best artist in the world.
The second character is more quite and simple, insomuch as he doesn’t notice the competition started by the first character.
We haven’t chosen the title of the short, we accept suggestions J.

Here some sketches of the second character (the quite and simple) and the background. The background must be a small square in a park, then some trees, 2 bench and some lamps.

The first artist is modeled and texturized. His name is Jerome.

Love the work so far. Definitely a great one to keep my eye on the whole process.
I have been to Paris a few times and every time I find myself walking to Ponte Alexandre III (an amazing bridge just south of Champs Elysees), where there are several painters doing wonderful work for the tourists. They set their bags and canvas up right at the Port on La Seine.
Maybe an idea for your location? Your concepts of the characters are really great ideas. Keep up the good work and I hope to follow this to the end.

Ablack: Paris is full of artists that paint for the tourist, and we'r inspired by these painters that you talk about... for the location I've think of a simple place in a park of Paris (maybe Montmertre).
Have you some photos of the location that you have seen? This can be great!

This is the second character (the quite artist) with some poses and expressions test. We accept suggestions for his name :)

Grade A work on the environment and the animation test. Your renders are coming out nicely. Keep up the good work. Only thing I could think of is to have more trees in the background on the finals. Don't want that horizon of nothingness in a park.

Looks really nice. I love the characters. And also sounds like a nice story :)
I like animations too. I think you already must have noticed that on the bad guy eyelid intersects the geomentry when he blinks.

yes, I have notices the intersection ;) We have done some animation tests also to find out the various problems... thanks "theflash"
What about the lighting?

first of all I love the way it looks the short it will be awesome!
About the lighting... I think there's too much light in the 2 last pictures maybe it's the exposure it is too heavy in the green of the trees (just my opinion).

Wow really nice, is this poly modelled or nurbs?
just asking because I maybe want to start on some project with others too sometime, but my nurbs modelling skills suck :-p But i really like the cartoony style.

My idea is to give to this cartoony short a very enlightened atmosphere, I think it must be full of light and colourful. you don't agree?
Look at the color and intensity of the light and at the color and intensity of the shadow on the character and the scene, are them compatible with the sky???
All the objects in the scene are poly modelled, no nurbs. I think this is the best way to create and texturize this kind of scenes...
The leaves on the tree are poly modelled and then multiply in a particle systems.
The grass are generated in Mental Ray.
For the rigging and animation we used Softimage CAT.
Then, the rendering engine used is mental ray.

I'm LOVING the characters you've got. The only thing I thought I'd mention is that it sounds like the story is almost identical to that Pixar short "One Man Band." Just thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't seen it yet. Keep up the good work!

I also think there is something with exposure I dont like. I understand what you are tring to achieve in the effect. However what I believe is that you can create any mood by creating a contrast. Like if you want to make gray look brighter put a dark black block. Or if you want to make a color look saturated, instead of increasing the saturation for that color you can add some elements in proximity which are dull or desaturated.
I love the animation so far. Really nice. I have heard of CAT, is it really helping a lot? Why did you guys decide to use CAT?

Yeah I can see a little bit of similar context in your movie compared to pixar's one mand band. However I wont really mind it if the story has an element which makes it totally different.

No, it still would be totally different, there are a lot of differentiations. More people, painters instead of musicians. I think it will be in how you let the story unfold how much people will see similarities.

I love so much the pixar's short film, then I know all the particulars about them!
I can assure you that the story is significantly different from One Man Band ;)
eg. while in the pixar's short the 2 musicians are fighting for the same trophy, in our short, only the bad character feel the competition with the second painter...
For the lighting I'm not completely satisfied, as also "theflash" says. I'll try to improve the contrasts and the exposure... some other suggestions?
We'r improving also the background that is a bit empty, as "ablack" says. But the trees requires so much memory and my computer crash frequently... (I have 3GB ram) maybe I should optimize them...

ah, yeah that definitely makes a big difference. From the synopsis it sounded like they were in a back and forth competition, but if its more of a one-sided thing it will give it a much different feel than One Man Band.

Hi! The storyboard is almost done, now is all clear for us about the story... I think the storyboard is a very important step in making films, with storyboard you can give a first look to the whole film, the scenes and shots. Unfortunately, due to the low budget, our storyboard isn't very detailed but useful.
Here, I post only the first 2 pages of the storyboard... I don't want reveal all about the short :D
