View Full Version : Hi Res Feng Tank
D_Nice 05-16-2003, 04:14 AM Hey how's it going. I'm currently working on a 3D model from a piece of concept art by Feng Zhu. I came across this pic and it caught my attention. I've been working on it for a week so far. I'm going for insanely high poly/high detail.
Excuse the low quality pic, as I'm using the image upload feature.
Here is what I have so far.
C&C always welcome as I'm hoping to use this for a piece on my demo reel so I can have something other than just pure animation.

Wow I completely thought it was a Feng work. Fantastic drawing Dangeruss. Do you have any problem with me modeling it and using it on a student demo reel (assuming it turns out to a point where I'm not embarassed by it). All credit would be given to you for the concept of course.

Ooof, you've got it all wrong.
It IS Feng's concept. The link I posted was to a toon render of my 3D model of the same concept. No attributions are necessary from me - I just wanted to share my results as we had chosen the same subject and hi-poly approach.
Good luck with yours.

Ah I got ya. In that case then, really nice toon shader. I'm hoping to have this model done within the next week. The hardest part is ahead for me. That is making up the areas which aren't shown on the original concept art.
I'll be sure to keep you posted as things progress.

small update.
I'm going to call it a day now. Tomorrow I will get started on the turret and the details to the back side of the top deck.
 and then to bed for me.

Thankfully mine is going to be different from that one. Mine will look just like the one in the link that Dangeruss posted in this thread.
Thanks for the kind words. I've been procrastinating all morning, and really have to get started on the gun turret.

Hey everyone. I finally got the chance to do some more work the last two days, so here's where I stand now. Unfortunately what is left to model, is what isn't shown on the original concept art.
God I hate 30kb limits :p
Enjoy

The lack of replies verses the views leads me to believe that the model is neither very good nor very bad.

i think the lack of response is because you make a 1:1 copy of a design that was modeled by another person before (which was also based on a design from feng zhu).
the modeling is nice but we all know how the result will look like.
imho itīs a better idea to make your own model an take the sketch as starting point (like the person who made the model you try to copy).
do something with it that gives it your personal touch.
my 5 cents. :)

I had no idea that the pic I had seen originally was a model at the time. :(
Sadly I've invested a bunch of time into this already. I'm at a point where I just want to finish and move on to character animation. I needed some modeling just to show that I can model as well as animate.
Oh well.

I think it looks cool.
If a nice textureing job is done it will make it different enough from the other model. Don't get discouraged that it was done before. Just make your own twist on the concept. Show us some other views of the model. I want to see all that detail!

You might want to check some of the smoothing paramaters you have on certain things the bevels are getting smoothed over on the turret and the main blocky body part. Try changing the smoothing angle from the default 30 to 20 or 15 degrees to sharpen the edges.

Yeah I need to do alot of work with the normals throughout all the edges. I actually haven't really done any normals with the exception of softening the cylinders. One thing I'm working on right now that I didn't even notice I hadn't been doing is subdividing and merging verts everywhere that I've extruded in on a cylinder. I was trying to mess with the normals and was wondering why there was a serious issue around every extrude. Turns out I had forgotten to add verts to the edges around the extrudes and snap them to the edges of the extrude. Everythign is coming along well now, and I'm trying to think up some different things I can do to make the model a bit unique.
I think alot of the uniqueness is going to have to do with the back and other side of the model which were never sketched out in any of Feng's concept work.
I had no clue that one pic from your site was actually a model. I forget where I came across it from in the first place, but I thought it was a piece of 2D CG art. Great shader and no harm meant in doing the same model that was done already. Hopefully I'll be able to get some variance in the back and sides of this model.

model is done. Only thing left for me is simple texturing, and tweaking out the normals and lighting.
Sorry for the poor quality jpgs Had to play around with the images to get under 30kb

great model i say, although it indeed looks very much like the one in the gallery.
very nice level of detail, im a sucker for detail

I'm still trying to tweak out GI Joe to get a bterr softer render.

hmmm so far not that happy with GI Joe. Anyone have any tutorials on setting up a really even and not overly intense lighting setup with GI Joe?

I think it looks great. I think it would be neat if you extracted a normal map from the geometry and then downrezed the model considerably and applied the normal map onto the downrezed model.

Interesting.
There are quite a few things that I'd *like* to do with it, but I just don't have the time really. I've only got less than 6 weeks before my demo reel is due and I have a ton of character animation that I need to do. My primary focus is animation, but I wanted to show that I can model as well. If I get done with my animation and have another week or so, I plan on doing another high res model for the reel.

ok GI_Joe sucks on a turntable. Shadows have a light flicker to them which is annoying. I'm working on trying to get my own GI type sphere made. Not having a good time lighting. Any ideas on what to do for a good lighting set up?

looks great!!
i saw that sketch a while ago and it was love on first sight. :)
i also modified my version a bit and gave it a more toon like look with phostoshop.

I love the Feng sketch and the model. Looks like would fit right into Metal Slug =)
Are you using some occlusion rendering or shader on the body?
Can't wait to see it textured, even if it has been done before, there's no reason not to show your take on the subject. How many Lambourghini Enzo's have you seen here over the last year?

It's actually not being textured. My texturing skills really wouldn't do it justice enough to go on my reel. I've choosen to just leave it with the soft monochromatic colors from GI Joe.
At around 600k poly, this bad boy isn't going anywhere near Metal slug. ;)
