I have maya License for one computer at my work place Maya 2008 Unlimited
I am using a small render farm of 4 computers ( Smedge)
Currently they are running on maya 6

If i have to change the platfom to 2008
Should i have to buy 4 more licenses or ....how does it work
Is ther somethign like network license is involved....

Or is it best to stick wid maya 6 since i have 4 license wid this

just load up Maya 2008 on all the render nodes -don't worry about the licensing...

You can perform "Satellite" rendering on 8 networked CPUs right out of the box.
(this is helpful for "bucket rendering" of a single large frame, but isn't recommended for rendering out animations)

If you want to use distributed frame rendering (for sequential animations) you will want to buy a 3rd party queue management utility and will need to purchase "mental ray stand alone" if you want to distribute rendering using the mental ray renderting engine.

oh, forgot that yuo have Smedge already...cool.

You should call your Autodesk dealer and ask for the upgrade pricing for your mental ray stand-alone licenses.

Hello Adam
I tried looking for Mental ray stand alone render engine..
When i called up Autodesk they said contact your local reseller and they gave me the local
Number but.. they have no clue on what i am talking about

In one of the websites..like in some x guy replied that its approximately around 500$..which just gave me an idea of how much it would cost.

Do you have any idea of the numbers of these guys
that would of great help
thanks in millions

I believe you need to be on a Support contract with Autodesk. If you are current on your support, the mr standalone upgrade is free.

Tell your reseller that they can find the pricing on the OTW (One Team Web) website for Autodesk partners.

Hello
One of my co workers spoke to .... The resellers where we got maya 2008
I am not sure wether we are in a support contract or seomthing ... We have just got the Maya from them in november last year ... Which they told us that we have to buy stand alone render engine, which would cost us 1000$

They also told us that we are eligible to install in 8 systems Maya2008 for satellite rendering ....which we is of no use .. since we going to render animations ....( still we tried installing ..it never alowed more than 2 systems )

I am jus wondering ...what if a studio has 50 Workstations and 30 Render Blades ..they have to buy 50 Maya( 4995$ +tax) with no price reductions and buy 30 MR render stand alone ..... is it always like this

I am not sure I might be wrong ..please correct me in the above statements......

Thanks for helping me out Adam.....
I really apperciate your effort ...

Cheers

My advice to you is to get a new Autodesk dealer. Yours apparently sucks.

You do not need to buy more Maya seats in order to purchase mental ray stand alone.

I don't have canadian pricing so I can't help you out...

Good luck man,

Adam
