I have a PC at home but for the road I use a Thinkpad for exactly that tools and it works fine though it has a Ati graphics card. Now it's on year old but maybe still more expensive than $800.
Take one with a Intel Core2Duo cpu, 2GB Ram, a large and fast(7200rpm) HD, NVidia graphics adapter and a nice screen, better one that is non-glare.
I would generally recommend Thinkpads, Apple and Dell Notebooks.

thanks for the info...there's a dell laptop (dell 1720) that sells for about $1700 that matches your specs. i'm going to look at some thinkpads with nvidia cards. thanks again.

The specs of that dell look fine. 17" is a nice large screen but makes the whole notebook rather unhandy and heavy. 17" is rather for desktop replacement but not for every day movement. If that is what you want.
