OK, This is my first modeling challenge. I am going to create a Robocop torso-bust (including arms).
I will be using Maya and ZBrush for this, which is going to be a bit of an adventure since I have only used Max before. But my new school only teaches Maya, so Maya it is.
I've already started roughing in the abdomen area. Going to create all the rough assets and then put them in ZBrush to refine, then back to Maya.

Worked a little bit on the chest and those proportions. I will work a lot tomorrow and hope to get the rest of him roughed in.

Looking goofd so far! But it is kind of hard to crit cause the reference is really low res. Any chance of putting up another one? Thanks in advance! Good luck!

Sure, the original one was just to show that I was working on Robocop himself and not Cain or ED-209. I totally forgot about reference.
Here is what I am basing the pose on:

Here's another one from the same part of the movie at a different angle.

I've learned that getting good reference on him can be tough for certain parts of his body because they are really glossy and can be hard to tell what's going on. Things like his hands/gloves and the inner/black part of the chest area is a bit vague.
I'm about to start working on this for a while, so I'll post an update when I'm donee

atm itīs hard to crit without further info.
so, are you going to smooth your modell? if so, can you show some smoothed views and different angles.
cheers

I will be smoothing smoothing, but right now I'm just blocking in the forms and getting proportions right. I haven't put in any extra loops for the hard edges yet, so right now if I were to smooth it, it wouldn't look at all like I want.

Didn't get to work as much as I wanted, but I got the head and neck roughed in with some small additions to the chest. I need to work on the proportions of the abdomen to the chest piece a bit, mainly in the back.

Finished roughing out the forms, now I need to add in some bevels for the hard edges so they stay in tact when I put it into ZBrush for detailing.

Looks nice, but I would probably subdivide some of those huge polygons more to get a more even topology in zbrush. Im no expert on this but it seems you will get a huge overhead in polys around the beveled edges if those large polys gets sufficient resolution from dividing in ZB.
Overall im damn curious how you will handle the modelling in zbrush without getting an overly organic look. - Looking forward to next update! =)

Worked on the head some. I'm having some crimping issues with the smooth, I was thinking of seeing if I could fix them in Zbrush with the smooth brush. Does anyone know if there is a "relax mesh" tool in maya? In Max I would to use PolyBoost tools for this problem, but don't know of anything for Maya.

Hi RoboCop fan. It lukes to me that you had mirrored the back side metalic part of the helmet and thats not right. It have to be a circle there. Here let me show you what i mean.http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/5838/robocop21fvx4.jpg

Wanted to post a quick update, I have finished most of the detailing on the helmet, head and chest. But this post was to show my start on his paint shader. It's been giving me a headache trying to figure out how it works but I'm starting to get it more like I want it. It's a little too green, but that's from the HDRI image.
Some more tweaking on this, then some more modeling, and then to do his face... then I will almost be done.

Another render test, this time with everything, not just the helmet. There are still small details in the armor that I need to finish, and obviously the face. Then to pose him. I'm also almost done with his gun which will be included in the pose as well.
I decided on abandoning ZBrush for major adjustments since I haven't UV'd him, and don't have the energy to. So I might leave off some of the small details like the engraving on his head and the nuts and bolts that you can see from outside. However, once I pose him, I will take it in there so I can fine tune the pose and put in details to things like his neck and arms where the black rubber would crease.

Finished modeling face and began texturing in ZBrush. I'm trying Scott Spencer's air brush technique. This is NOT what the face will look like finished. I'll post new pics of the full model with the final texture in a bit.

Here's my near final image. I will do some touchup's in photoshop. I will also add my wires and ortho shots soon. Let me know what you think.

Looks pretty good, but I think that it is a bit too dark except for the skin. It appears that the skin is lit by a brighter light source than the rest of him.

Good call, I just realized how different that shot is from my previous tests. I must have rotated the model a bit and that's giving me the different reflections.

Thanks. Like I said above, I must have been working too closely to it to realize that it was really dark. Thanks to Jedi-Juice for point that out. I'm way happier with the result.
