In a far corner of the spaceport, upleft candidates are for sale by the humans. This particular race is very interested in the parrot. After all, it can already talk.

Welcome to the Challenge. :)

Interesting concept you've here, hope you'll have the time to develop it by the deadline...

All the elements are placed. A little more has been added to the story. Time to start in with details.

Looks good! I'm thinking some warm tones on the characters could be a nice contrast and make them stand out. I like the composition. I hope you have time to finish it!

I'm getting close now. You'll notice the "uplifted" dog in the foreground.

I think I could use a 3D modeler for the towers, but I don't have one. Any suggestions for 3D beginners? I'm strictly 2D with Painter X, and traditional media. I'm not sure I like the 3D look typically, but I was thinking about toying with something, if it doesn't have too high an entry threshhold.

I think this is about finished, but I would appreciate any pointers if you see something you think needs fixing. Thanks.

Uplift Contraband

In a far corner of a back world spaceport, Joy Lucien from the Black Band was making a sale to the Cotle, a warlike race of avian aliens. The Cotle, like the rest of the universe, were very interested in the untapped resources earth offered for uplift species. Of course, access to earth’s rich fauna was a problem, and so was politics, but under the right circumstances, and for the right price, these could be bypassed. Of special interest to the Cotle’s flight leader at the moment was the Maccaw, which Joy had promised could already vocalize.

The damned parrot was suddenly reticent, and Joy was getting nervous. The Cotle had been known to take things personally, and this one looked dangerous.

Her boss and lover, Harkin Johnston, needed this sale. He assured her it would set up a series of sales, as sure as any drug. It would guarantee them income for many years, as the Cotle worked on their slow uplift process. Harkin should know, he had worked on many uplift projects before he left the establishment and started the Black Band. He had developed an accelerated uplift process, which dispensed with much of the formalities, and involved considerable risk. It had scared the aliens. But Joy knew it was working, as evinced by Baltus, who she saw checking something out over by the cages. She had never been a dog lover, but Harkin thought canines were a natural choice, and unfairly stinted by romantic notions of sea mammals and primates. He had been right.

Now, this parrot had better start talking.
