Yo, when I'm animating, I've aligned the pivot point of the knee to a cylinder I made that will control the movement of the knee itself.

The knee has been linked to the cylinder as well, so whatever the cylinder does, the knee responds accordingly.

But when I try animating 5 frames, it rotates around in a weird circle, when in fact all I wanted it to do was rotate forward, not in a circle. Any thoughts?

Check out your curves....i've found them to go a bit crazy form time to time...pick a key and play around with the coorindates of that point, might be something to do with the scene or rigging, not sure.....ut u can usually solve it with the curves...i think :)

if you're using max, don't use the link found on the toolbar, instead use the wire parameter to connect the rotation XYZ. if you want to offset the cylinder, wire the position XYZ as well but in the expression, do sth like this: X_Position + 50 (where 50 is 50 units offset from your knee).

anyway, actually I'm not very familiar with rigging, so.... hope this help. :P Let me know if thing still not right, I'm learning too. ^^

I deleted all my cylinders and used helpers instead. It worked out fine.
