View Full Version : Assistance building a New Render Farm/Cluster

I'm replacing my workstation as it just cant hack heavy models and complex Maxwell renders any more.

So I was going to basically build a new pc with the best components I could find, with a budget of about $6k.

Then... I stumbled across that IKEA HELMER Render farm project, and it occurred to me that I'd be able to build a much more useful render farm AND a decent workstation for that money.

So, I've done quite a few web searches and found a few ways to build a render farm cheaply - i.e. in an IKEA cabinet or By hooking up a million old, redundant pcs.

What I want to do though is to build one that's as simple, neat and self contained as possible - using new components. I need it to be neat as I work in a shared office and people wont take kindly to a sprawling mess.

Ideally, I would like be able to have the whole shebang in one enclosure - workstation and render farm. Are 8u rackable server cases capable of holding 8 mother boards?

Another idea is - is there a way of just allowing the workstation of accessing the CPU and RAM from the other motherboards? I think i saw something about Render Clusters somewhere but dont really understand what that is.

I'm thinking of going with 6-8x Core 2 Quad Q6600, because they run cool and are eminently overclockable along with 8gb ram per node.

So... The moon on a stick please!

This depends on how large your rack systems are. If you have an 8U Rack, you will, at best, be able to put 8 1u rack cases in there. Though thanks to the size, these units will be REALLY loud and probably not useful in a shared office type of environment ;)

Not sure what you're talking about.. But render farms have many names. Render clusters is just one of them. At the end of the day, you essentially have a bunch of individual computers connected by network, that receive jobs from a controller node (computer). They render out the image and send it to a file server for storage.

If that's the case, make sure to get a 64bit OS, and a 64bit renderer / render farm manager. Otherwise that 8GB goes to waste :)

If you are going to put it all in a IKEA cabinet why are you worrying about cases? Use the cabinet as the case.....

Modify it to suit what you are intending to do...I.E. make motherboard mounts on posts...and get your cooling setup squared away with whatever fans you will need to cool the entire case/IKEA cabinet.

Just get a few nice mobo's and plug some Q6600's into them and cluster them all. un it all off one "Main" system which I would go with something decent with a good graphics card.

As long as you can run a saw and a drill you can make the Cabinet be your case....

Youd probably need:
skill saw
jig saw
drill
drill bits
And some materials...Could even so the motherboard backplates in metal if you want just find a metal fabrication shop in the phone book. Wont cost you much as there isnt much to it...they can cut some plates to size drill the holes and give you a way to mount them....

Thats my 2 cents anyhow
