I've spent a good six hours trying to get this effect.

I grabbed duncans fire (turbulentFire) From the visor and started with that. I can get nice variation by screwing with the fuel and temperature options but I'm a little fuzzy on how to get the type of fire that has very jagged edges. The fire I have is more flowing and swirling.

What's the dilly?

I thought the fire in LOTR was some of best. Here's a tutorial that does a pretty good job of reproducing it. It's not for Maya, but the same principles apply.

thanks for your input. I have totally avoided sprites but one of my coworkers seems to love them.

I'm still interested in the fluid effects too if anyone else wants to jump in.
