View Full Version : HMC14- Robby the Robot (Rockstarkate)
RockstarKate 04-30-2008, 10:50 PM Well, I've been contemplating whether or not I have time to do this and I've decided to give it a go. Since the subject I'm most interested in is a little simpler than some of the others, I'm going to be going for speed (also so I can complete it!)
Here's an awesome reference I'm using:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c15/rockstarkate/robby-cinefantastique-09.jpg
I like this version, where one of the arms is stationary and can hold a tool. I'm not sure what tool I'll have him hold. The other arm will have a 3 fingered hand.
I think I'll put him in a colorful scene; something inspired by this:

And here are the basic proportions blocked in with primitives and simple models:

Looking forward to participating :)

Very nice and easy start to get it started! Can't wait to see the detail you are adding! Good luck!

Thanks!
I started the legs and torso. I've found that the best thing I can do for myself to stay motivated is to do the part I am least interested in first. In this case I'm looking forward to doing all the little gadgets on the head and the arms. So I started with the feet :)
Got those annoying armholes out of the way too.

Thanks Chris, I'll be posting some more progress tonight!
Don't let me stop you, you can make Robby too if you want :) The more Robbies the merrier!
By the way, in searching for reference material, my nerdy desires overcame my better judgement and I ended up buying this:
Ultimate Collector's Edition of Forbidden Planet (http://www.monstersandcritics.com/dvd/archive/dvdarchive.php/Forbidden_Planet_%28Ultimate_Collector%27s_Edition%29/9053)

Very cool set; good hunting.. :D But nah, I've already picked a new direction and started running (still going vintage, though; doing up a Doctor Who Dalek!).
How was the torso done? Sub-D's?

It's all box modeling, except that I started with a big cylinder and booleaned out the arm hole, which then had to be cleaned up for the nice mesh that will be happy with smoothing :)
I'm still working on the hip area- did a lot last night, but didn't get a chance to post. Maybe I can sneak it in during the workday somehow...

Looking good still; very smooth connections... From the references I'm looking at, those connector struts joining the waist to the upper ball-thingies need to attach further down; around halfway down the ball. Have a look:

Still, that's a pretty easy fix. Good luck in progressing; it looks like such a fun design to do :)

Robby Lives!
This month turned out to be even more hectic than I thought. But there may yet be hope... it all depends on what I can accomplish tomorrow, the beautiful third day in a 3 day weekend :) We shall see... But I did some more work on him today. Thanks a lot for the encouragement, it definitely pushed me to keep going.

Hoorah! Glad to see you're still in the game! One more reason to love holiday-weekends. I'm digging that control panel in his chest.

nice choice, nice modeling, great film ..Forbidden Planets ..I remember if I'm not wrong there was something similar to a compact disk and the film was made in the fifties. Also the energy monster from the subconscious...lol it gave me nightmares when I saw it when I was a child. The robot also scared me for some reason don't remember why but the monster from the id is really something...

I agree, there is something scary about the design of Robby, even though he looks a little goofy. I compare it to a clown. There isn't anything obviously frightening about him-no knives, guns, etc... but there's still something creepy about the overall appearance. Actually, the more I look at him the creepier he gets :)
I started on the inside of the "head" last night but didn't get a chance to post it. Hopefully tonight I will finish the modeling so I can set him in a scene before the deadline!

Now on to the hands, then pose, then texture, then see if I have time to stick him in a quick scene.

Nicely done; he's looking great!
Here's a photo (http://www.kayshapero.net/Kayimages/WorldCon%202006/LACon%20IV%20Robbie.jpg) that shows the details pretty well. Could help in getting those last-minute refinements in. You're in the home-stretch now; I'm glad you made it!

You mis-spelled "Invisible" in the poster, but that aside I love it! :applause:

haha yeah! You spelled invisible with an invisible "i"
I love the colour scheme you picked....well done Kate

Oh that... yeah, um... that's the hand lettering on the poster...;)
Maybe I'll get a chance to fix it tonight. Too busy messing with the fonts and improper scaling to notice, I guess
Glad you like the colors, it was a fun mood to try to capture.
