ok, i've been using 3d studio for a while, and i like it a lot. However, I want to become a visual effects person for video, and everywhere i go i hear that maya is the thing to be in. all the major companies like pixar, esc use it. I've also heard that for movies, it's generally more powerful. Also, from what I've seen of maya and Alias, I like.

I hate to leave max now, but I think that it would be a better choice for me. What do you guys think? Is this a good choice? Will I be able to learn maya faster now that I am familiar with 3d concepts from 3ds max?

I'll be posting this message in a few forums to hear a wide variety of responces before I make this desision.

PLEASE DO NOT START FLAMING OVER THIS TOPIC, I DO NOT WANT TO MODS TO DELETE IT, ALTHOUGH THEY MIGHT ANYWAY.

i would just like some responses because this is a difficult choice for me to make.

Why would learning Maya make you "leave" Max? You should learn a second package, but that doesn't mean you can't stay up to date with the first.

Knowing multiple packages will make you much better at CG in general -- you'll learn what are the constants and what differs between software and you'll be able to better understand how to pick the best tools for any particular job.

I'd pick Maya, Houdini, and Softimage as the next three packages for you to learn, in that order. :D

I switched to Maya little over a year ago. I would say just based on my own experience I had better luck landing a job in visual effects biz. I used Max for a little while but got really frustrated because I felt I was missing out on notable projects and being able work at large and established studios. This time around the grass was greener on the other side...I went from a quasi game/video post boutique shop to the studio where I am....working on Spy Kids 3 movie...We're working with other vendors and most of them use Maya...so, it's something you should consider when you're looking to switch...To be honest I've not picked up either Max or LW since.....I got Deep Exploration so just in case I need to model something organic I use LW...only because I'd paid for them...;) So, I gotz to put them to use.

Hope this help in eliviating your career dilemma.
