View Full Version : 3D Showreel
PoPpiN 04-29-2008, 08:50 PM Hi guys
Here's my latest 3d showreel, hope you like it. All work is done in my sparetime besides my work as a 3d artist and compositor at a production house here in Copenhagen.
The file is quite big - 112mb - Hope it's not a problem. Had some problems while encoding it for the web (hence the brightness is quite high)
Its a H264 Quicktime in 720p - click here (http://www.bannestyle.dk/ErnstShowreel.mov)to watch or right click to save
*** A smaller version can be found here (http://www.bannestyle.dk/EKShowreel08.mp4), 22mb Quicktime

WOW, Ernst ... that was so amazing ... the whole works are greet, but I liked your lighting modes the most ... the intro is so good too, it's ratatouille music, right ?
could you share the techniques of the old temple lighting ???

Hey Yusuf
Thanks alot for the kind words, really glad you liked it.
The Intro was inspired by Ratatouille, but the music isn't actully from the movie.
The Cathedral was rendered in Vray - using a Diret light as sun with area shadows - A gradient is used for Skylight - alot of Omnis is placed around the scene to work as fill lights (using attenuation for falloff, that way I can control how much they affect their surroundings)
Of course GI is enabled (but only for the first bounce - the scene is very heavy, around 3.7 million polygons).
I rendered the whole thingout in passes (Z-buffer, Multimatte ids.....)
Did a whole lot of color correction in Combustion added fog, glares...
-the render from max is actually quite boring - Post work is an essential part of this work.
Kind regards
Ernst

Hi guys
@Mastone: Thanks Alot...Really appreciate the kind words and you know what- Thats a good question, allways when I'm browsing Cgchannel or other CG sites I ask myself that question : Where do people get the time from...
I guess its a priority thing, and in this business there's allways room to be better and learn new stuff...so for me its one those things I wanna have time to do (its my love, its my hobby)
That being said I just moved in with my girlfriend, so guess time's also a fading thing
@shkumbinferizi: The earth is just a sphere as you probably already guessed - Its all in the shader - First of all I found some great maps on the internet (they where free, I just did a search on Google).
Then I did a mask for Spec - that way its only the ocean showing the reflection from the sun (just an Omni) - Did some Mixing with clouds and stuff - If I remember correctly I think I used a cloud map that comes with 3ds max as standard.
The glow, Color grading.... where applied in post (combustion).. Even the shadow areas where derived from a color correction in post.
This short sequence where more of an exercise to see how little you could do in the 3d software and still get away with a pretty descent result (as said most work is in the compositor software - the actually rendering looks pretty crappy)

Wow... very cool Demoreel!
I liked your car renders the most. They looked amazinly real!
Your other stuff is great too. Great lighting everywhere!
One little critique. In your last shot, the helicopters had
way to much motion blur! It looked kind of strange to me!
Thanks for sharing your reel! Keep it up, your great work!

Simply amazing mate. That's a great deal of superb modeling and smart compositing.
Wasn't very dynamic, but apart form that flawless.
Keep it up.

Wow!!!
My jaw really dropped!
Great job!!!
Great work PoPpiN!! Loved the rally scene and the Nissan car... great job with the rendering/lighting!
A quick question - the reel looks really sharp and detailed... is the majority of the work HD?

Amazing! I like how it starts off, all quiet and unsuspecting, then kicks in with some awesome shots. Keep it up!
That's one hell of a demo reel ! Lighting is beautiful, the Porsche Carrera GT is just like real.
Love it really !

Thanks for the comments guys
Most of the reel is renderen at 1280x720 and some of my older stuff is just rendered at 720x405 and then upscaled for the reel
I'wll put a new version up in the next couple of days... With a new encoding (to make black black and not grey)
Take care
Ernst
