CGTalk - Exploding Earth

I need to have an earth explode into many pieces without the help of any external plugins. What I have so far isn't that bad, but as the earth explodes it only goes off in 2 directions instead of being spread out evenly in all directions. I am attaching the scene file for anyone who may be able to help me with this issue. I've messed around with what seems to be hundreds of settings and nothing seems to work. I am using collisions and hardFX.

manually animating the large peices and using paticles for the small stuff
could be a way to do it. you can also comp in some explosion elements.
I guess it depends on the shot.

C4 would do exactly what your looking for and It's painless to setup. Look into flay...
