Hi All,
I am using a 3ds max z-depth render in after effects and I want to be able to apply desaturation, blur and colour balance into the distance.

In photoshop I just use the zdepth as a mask and this works fine.

I followed this tutorial but it is a little brief: http://www.highend3d.com/maya/tutorials/rendering_lighting/shaders/209.html

The setup I have is the image on the bottom, then the zdepth - hidden and with luma matte and then another copy of the image on top.

I thought that if I then edited the top layer with blur etc, then this would work - but I guess I am doing something wrong.

If someone can point me in the right direction, that would be great.

thanks a lot.

[edit] I am using After Effects 7 Pro

Mattes affect the layer below them, not the one above. The matte must be placed on top of the layer you are tweaking and that layer must reference it as Luma matte. If you apply blurs, you need to pre-compose this setup or otherwise your edges will remain sharp.

Select the layers, hit Ctrl+Shift+C (or in the menu Layer --> Pre-Compose).
