View Full Version : HMC #14 Westworld: The Gunslinger
japetus 04-28-2008, 02:42 AM Gonna try out this newest HMC with The Gunslinger from Westworld! Here's a little refrence as to what he looks like. Since he's fairly human, the challenge will be making him look menacing and dangerous and exposing his parts.

I started on the head today. I'm liking the way the poster displays the head, with the lower half of the face gone, so I think that's the way I'm going to go. It's already starting to freak me out a little...

Just another quick update to finish out my work from last night. I started adding an ear and his hat. Didn't quite complete the head before I fell asleep, but hopefully I'll get to that tonight.

Getting ready to do some cloth simulating. I loaded up the super average man from zbrush to give me a starting point, but just using him for some cloth simming. Gonna be cutting it up and adding some blood on the shirt also I think

Grrr, sorry if people can't see my WIPs, my hosting site is being retarded today. If it keeps up I'll move them to flickr or something.

I have always liked that poster from this movie, creepy looking guy. So far the head look pretty good, I think the upper torso could use some reduction of edge loops in the arms and center chest. Good luck

the hard part will be making him look like Yul Brynner .. and not just some cybernetic, psychopathic bald cowboy...
... 'cos that would be easy ..:)

Thanks reed, I agree I threw that geometry on there rather hastily, and now it's not working out so I'm gonna go back and be a bit more careful.

Indeed that is the hard part! I've come to realize this model has become a bit too "human modeling challenge" for me. I've been thinking about other ways of displaying him, like maybe just the upper torso on a gurney, or the lab in hte movie. I don't want to spend all my time making clothes. Perhaps he can be in a state of disrepair in the lab. I dunno. I'll definately be taking the head into zbrush too and getting Yul to come out of him.
Thanks for the comments guys!

you are allowed to only do a bust, i believe, so that would mean only head and shoulders ..
..and you could model him after he's had acid thrown over his face, in which case the entire face "panel" is removed ...

Really? Well I guess that makes sense as the categories are Bust, Diorama, and Collection. Well that makes my job a bit easier then! :)
Full speed ahead!!

You can do a full version of the robot...
BUT
It has to be done from scratch.

I think I'll try the bust...I like the idea of just concentrating on his head and a partial torso. I don't have oodles of time to spend on this so that will allow me to really concentrate my efforts. thanks for the clarifications!

I reckon a bust will look really good mate, go for it ..

Another update. I think basica modeling is done. Probably take it into zbrush a bit next and/or start on the face electronics. Been thinkin about having his mouth area fallen onto the ground in front and broken...could be interesting.

How about hanging off by some cables? kind of a mix between the ref image you used from the film where it's lying on the bed and what simjoy suggested with the acid

Started sculpting the face in a bit more in zbrush...

I think he's looking a bit more Yul Brynner now...he's lookin good for now, gonna move onto the shirt I think. It's pretty hard to make a head look like someone when half the face is missing :)

Yes that is starting to look a lot more like him! Nice sculpting making all those subtle details! Can't wait to see this completed!

Is that a photo of Yull Brynner ?? ;)
very good, i think you have managed to capture his look quite well. since the eyes are all you see of him, youve done a good job ..

Thanks guys! This is about as detailed of a model I've ever made in zbrush so I'm pretty pleased with it right now :) I'm really excited to see how this turns out also.

Argh, getting all the data back into max is being a pain. I still have trouble knowing what type of normal map to use and getting high enough resolution detail onto the map. A lot of my pores seem to be missing and/or randomly placed on the map...grr. Will update tomorrow

A quick update... textures are very much in flux. Still kind of learning about how to deal with a fleshy character, don't do much of these. Will replace crappy eye texture and face interior to come.

Made a lot of progress today! I tweaked the skin shaders some more and attempted some eyebrows with Hair. I also started hard on the innards of the robot. It's damn hard to get any useful reference so some of this I might have to sorta make up :(. However it's pretty interesting modeling a robot that is made of computer parts, not metal hinges and pistons.

I had a great idea before I went to bed, so I sketched it in in photoshop. Basically teh Gunslinger's skin is still burning from the acid so there is smoke swirling around on the left side and some skin is bubling and falling off.

Nice progress! I also have to compliment your subtle approach to zbrush-detailing. Usually ppl tend to give overboard with wrinkles but you seem to keep it down to earth.
keep it up!

Well, I wasn't able to finish this one up for the contest, but I'm gonna finish him anyway! Darn life getting in the way! Better luck next time :)
