View Full Version : HMC 14 - ABC War Robot

I'll be doing the one from the Judge Dredd movie, I saw that when I was a kid and I always thought it looked awesome. This particular ABC bot was exclusive to the movie, and it was never actually in the 2000 AD series, so finding reliable reference for this guy is pretty rough. I've been going through the scenes on the DVD frame by frame reconstructing reference images via my sketchbook. I'll post some of those sketches in due course. Just wanted to make a quick post to state my intention to participate. If there's time, I'd like to have him incapacitating a judge in some sort of diorama. We shall see.

JD is just best! I never saw the movie and I never will because they ruined the Dredd by taking off his helmet, those suckers!
Anyway the ABC bot sounds somehow familiar... Mayby it was eastmegs that had a tank called abc or something...must be a different thing.

2000AD crossed over with several comics, and the backstory of the dredd universe was rooted in 2000AD if I remember correctly. In the movie, Rico finds a decomissioned ABC War Bot and fixes him up to do his bidding. The robot looks a lot like Hammerstein in some aspects, but has a unique style all his own.

There was a book called 'The Art of Judge Dredd, it featured the concept for this ABC Warrior, nicknamed MACH, initial concept by Kev Walker and final concept by Chris Halls.
Don't know if that's any help ? Probably my fav movie robot, aside the obvious CSM101
There are images of him on the net, I found some a while back doing a google image search, good luck :thumbsup:

Alright, found some time this weekend to start blocking this guy out. Here's WIP #1.
I'm going to get the rest of the body blocked out before I start working on all of the microdetails, geometry optimization, etc.

Got the pelvis area, some more internal mechanical components, and the shoulder pads blocked out. I've got some ideas for the internal structure.. only parts of it are visible in most shots, but I want to make sure that whatever angle I end up rendering from there are no 'holes' where I missed some robotics.
Most of the internals I'm having to kind of improvise, there aren't refs available for any of that stuff, but I've sketched out some designs of what I think it would look like and so far it seems to be going alright. Weekend is almost over, I hope to have the rest of the blocking in done here pretty quick so I can spend the rest of the month working on details, and eventually textures/scene/etc (whatever I end up having time for before the deadline).

judge dredd was on tv today, hadn't seen it in awhile...forgot how wicked this robot was. this is really looking great! nice job thus far, i have no doubt that this will be awesome when it's done. way to go, keep up the awesome job.

Hooray for the weekend.. I can continue working on this guy now. I've pretty much finished blocking in the entire body now, I hope to have the arms/hands blocked out by tomorrow early afternoon so I can start detail work by sunday morning.

Anyway, this guy is blocked in.. I'm going to use the proxy model to build up the details, and those WIP's will be coming soon. Here's the finished blocked-in war bot:

Nice blocking man, but I think you should check the proportions bit. Esp. the legs seems huge. Heres a tip: Set up the character (roughly) with dummies and "animate" a pose similar to the one in the photo on frame 1 (frame 0 being the relaxed posed you have now) You can then easily switch between the two. Then take screenshots from the same angle as the photo and compare / superimpose the images in photoshop. That should help you get a good idea of the proportions :) Hope you can use it :)

Well, I guess it's worth mentioning that I'm combining a couple references. The model I've built is far closer to the vinyl Tsukuda model than it is to the movie animatronic, but I took visual cues from both. I liked the proportions a lot better on the Tsukuda version, but I agree, the legs definitely need to be scaled down a bit.

It's looking pretty good - great to see him whole :)
I think may be the knees are too low down though, too close to the feet. It seems the knee joint on the leg isn't aligned to the joint on the knee armour.

If you're talking about the round thing on the lower calf, that's not actually the joint.. it's some sort of motor or actuator, the joint is up higher :)

The latest update, just working on cleaning up geometry so it subdivides correctly. Once I get to that point I'll take individual parts into zbrush and start roughing them up a bit.. adding dents/scratches/etc.

He's looking great even with the rough geo. So do you have to lay out the uvs before you bring in each individual piece to Z-brush? I'm fairly knew to that workflow..
