View Full Version : A moray in a cave
Rosie 04-27-2008, 09:00 PM Hello everyone.
I made this moray eel.
It´s modeled and rendered in Modo, animated and composited in Blender, textures and such are made in photoshop.

That's awesome! Very nice render by the way.
My only crits are: When the mouth opens, it's bending in the middle instead of from the back of the jaw, and (this is only a matter of taste) to add some realism, it would be nice to see some more ripple in the dorsal fin as it swims away from the camera.
Camera work is awesome, that's a great model, and like I said renders are very good.
Well done IMO
Edit: After looking at it again, the mouth looks fine...it's just the shape that was throwing me off! My bad. great stuff.

Never seen one in real life, and after seeing your animation - I never want to! Creepy! Very nice, fluid movement there: Really seemed like he was moving through water. Could have added even more realism by having some more little particles floating around in the water. I think there was some in the BG right, but I'm not sure if that's what those little spots were supposed to be, or reflections of some kind. Great job!

Congrats on a very well accomplished piece!
I really think you nailed that feeling of volumetric scattered light in the cave and on the moray.
The only crit I can think of is that the mouth opens a bit robot-like, as if the moray was an animatronic puppet.
But other than that, 5***** for great lighting, shading, modeling, rendering, staging and overall animation.
Good work m8!

Uh.. creepy - in a good way. I was expecting it to suddenly snap at the camera.. very tense. Great animation, texturing and rendering!
Yet, I I agree with the critique on the mouth, it really opens a bit too fast and linear.
And a second thing (I just realized that by the third time I watched it) – does the moray cast any shadow on the walls at all? It rather looks like a static background picture.
Anyway, terrific stuff and very moody.
Great work!
Nicely done, Rosie! Great atmosphere and sense of moving through water. Keep it up!

Thank you all for the great comments! If you´re wondering what those little straws are on top of the head, well they are nostrils. Some moray species have really big ones and another thing, morays got two mouths :)
Thanks again!

I love how you caputred the fleshy feel of the eel especially inside the mouth. Its very believeable. I showed a friend of mine and she didn't believe it was CG. Great job!

Nice going Rosie!
Having seen this one unfold from a WIP has been inspiring. And the final result is really nice! The feeling of an underwaterscene is very well captured. I like the eel alot....( and especially the nostrils:-) )
All in all, stars from me:-) *****
