Rendering->Texturing->3DPaintTool
Look at the option box and check out the doc for usage info.

Yes, it works, but unfortunately, you cannot paint in 2d !!!
Ok you can import into the PFX canvas, save and reload, but how much cooler it would be, if one could paint directly in the UV Texture editor.
The best thing imho would be a marriage between UV texture editor and paintFX canvas.

every day i pray to the maya gods to make this dream a reality, but the gods... they don't listen... and the people suffer... :annoyed:

antweiler, are you sure you can't paint in 2d using the paintFX window (in the window menu). I think we can !
Thanks

I think he wants to paint in the texture placement window, because one can see how the polys are laid out. You can't do it directly, but the following might help:
If you edit the texture in canvas mode in the paint effects panel and turn on Canvas->autosave(on the panel menu) then after each stroke is drawn the texture is saved and the changes will appear in the texture placement window, as well as in the 3d viewports. It is a good idea to make a copy of your texture before doing this, because you cannot revert to the original when painting this way. Of course working with multiple views open is not as nice as just painting directly into the texture window. We may add this someday.

Antweiler.. It would be much easier to add a mode in the paint effects canvas view that displays the polygons(in a non editable form), rather than impliment painting in the texture placement window. Would this do what you want? If you were working in the texturePlacement window you could then simply hit the 8 key when you wish to paint, then hit it again when you want to go back to editing.

this would for sure help alot, the polygon layout should update to the edits in the UV editor (meaning, that it doesnt have to be reloaded)
another cool thing would be the implementation of the complete Photoshop toolset:thumbsup:

There exists a very cool script/plugin coded by a french that make possible to paint our texture in real-time (not totaly real ;) ) in photoshop and see the result in maya.
Look at highend3d.com library

this is not nearly as nice a solution as being able to paint in the UV editor however...

the script that Nicool is talking about is
ATR : Maya to Photoshop Connection v1.1:
click here 7th form the top (http://www.highend3d.com/maya/mel/?group=melscripts§ion=rendering)
I works realy well. Just create ane uv snapshot with a black background and when you open it in photoshop make hte layar a screen and have it the top most layer.
just tear off copy of the perspective viewport and resize so you dont have to split the screen.

do you have any texture in the scene. you need to at least apply an white texture to you geometry befroe you hit the atr button.
When you hit the atr button a box should pop up with a list of textures in the scene. so if there is no textures it wont work.
if you think about it it it makes sense. .. how is it going to know how to or where to apply a texture if you dont already have one and the textureplacement utility.

well yes, that does make sense which is why i do have texture applied to the geometry and the texture is open in photoshop as well. yes, i get a little list and select my file, yes, i do get the headsup display that ATR is Active but the error appears at that point. no black temporary texture is made on my object, the scripts in Photoshop complain about not being able to "Save As Copy" when i try to run them and no link is made between Maya and photoshop.. this is why i asked if anyone had tried it with photoshop 6, just to figure out what is going wrong in my setup........... :surprised .
I'm sleepy... will try it again tomorrow. thx.

I tried to do it once because it would be so intuitive, I thought it might... What a dissapointment when it didnt work. If my vote would make it happen, you got my vote!

While we're at it, Id like to be able to paint over seems in the model using the clone tool, with any combination of layers I want... so that I cam preforming the same task on bump maps and spec and difuse when I do it on the color map.
is there a script that would remember strokes? then I could apply it to diferent maps one at a time?
