Hey GUYS AND GALS

Dispite having a job or not we still have to produce a demo reel for part of our course. Tell me if you think it's any good? I want to get a 1st in my degree. And hoprfully this Demo reel might demonstrate my skills as an character animator to our teachers at our university? Are there any teachers out there? What do you look for when marking student work?

DEMO REEL (http://www.characteranimation.co.uk/johnleedownload.html)

C+C welcome

Thanks

Hey just wanna say great animation you got there, Didnt realise it was you who did the devil yoda. Thats my fav.

I have been living in lincoln for 5 years but am at Portsmouth Uni studying 3D computer animation. I will have my showreel finished over the next few days so I will post up mine aswell.

U gonna be in Lincoln over the summer coz me and my mate wanna do some sort of games project designing, moddeling and animating characters etc, so if u want you could take part.....bit more work for portfolio.

wow, exellent work. makes me feel like poop :D

i wanna express some intrest in the course your doing. you see, I'm a 3rd year student at abertay uni in dundee doing "computer arts" and we've done 3d animation, but no one has got as far as what you've done. this is becuase our course is a total "jack of all trades" shebang where we cover 2D/3D animation, modelling, video, audio, flash programming, compositing and all this conceptual art theory stuff.

right now i'm deciding wether to do 4rth year or not, or try and start building a decent folio. but another idea is maybe doing a course totally focused on 3d animation, which is where i want to head. thing is all these courses are in england so it would take a monkey load to persuade me to do it. do u have any recomendations for your course or similar ones?

i'm just really intrested to know what other computer art courses are like so i can compare to shitty abertay..

but yeah, great work man!! ( your also the same age as me, so i'm really jealous  )

Wow John, this is really nice stuff. I like the physical animation stuff the best, where the two characters are running, jumping, swinging, etc.

I would probably take out the lip sync where he says "What is the Matrix", as it it not as solid as everything else on your reel.

Employers tend to judge you by the worst stuff on your reel, not your best. The lip sync bit takes away from the rest of the reel, in my opinion. Everything else is so solid, you don't need the lipsync anyhow.

Mangled Poly - Hey thanks man. There's a film to follow so will give you a shout when done? :)

Animator395 - Hey man if you want a good reel just take a look around on this Forum. There are so many Talented artist! BUt thanks for saying that. What grade you hoping for?

ninjacore - This is a tricky one. Where's your preference? Uk or US or asia? Hmm.. If you want to specialise in character animation. One of the best schools is Calarts In the US. People from Pixar Hire directly out of there. BUt it's $$$$$$$$$$$$ Are you rich?? i think it's like $22k a year? Somehitng like that? I was thinking of going there But not sure? hehe :) There isn't any where in the Uk that specialises in character animation i don't think. Our course is like the one you talked about . you have to be able to do just about everything . LoL Hope that helps. Here is out site for the uni www.lincoln.ac.uk

TANGOMAN - Really thanks ma. hehe Like i said there will be a film on it's way. and 4 min short just on the race.

Floyd Bishop - Hey Floyd WOW this means alot coming from a ex blue sky animator. Thanks man. Yeah i agree with the lip sync . it was just a quick test i did with bones to see if i could get similar mouth shapes. Did blue sky use Morphs or bones in the face? If so how many shapes were there and were they vowels?

Thanks Guys

Nice reel. Just that when I downloaded the MPEG version of your demo reel, it was extremely choppy and kept messing up.

Yet the DIVX version looks sweet and clean

EDIT: Oh nevermind.. heh it was RealONE player that was having trouble with the animation. Windows Media Player did just fine with both versions of the reel. :-)

John Lee
05-14-2003, 07:07 PM
Hey Night fox

That's really wired cause the Divx version plays choppy on my windows media player. But the mepg file players really smooth for me.

Thanks anyways man

John-

I look around here all the time man and honestly very well done character animation! As far as grade, my instructor grades harder than the devil so Im not looking for that so much as I am having a good product to sell myself. I would give you and A most definately, my insturctor would critique you for an hour and a half though and give you a C-B.

John Lee
05-14-2003, 07:58 PM
Hexodam - Well actually i'm in the middle of making a short now LoL for my final year project. So it should be finished within the next few mouth I hope. It's just so hard doing everything your self. you know what i mean I've had to get extra help! But all together 9 mouth in total

Animator395 - thank you man. Jesus your tutor must be a master animator? :) I can't wait to see your show reel! :)

yo john. i was meaning for just a uk course, seeing as i live in the uk;)

i was just simply intrested to know exactly what you do there, just to comapare to my course... heres the link to my uni so u may scoff at its poopness. i do the BA Computer ARtswww.abertay-dundee.ac.uk/

I DL'd your "race" animation sometime about while it was in comp.

You have some of the most fun stuff. Even without the render, I could not help but to watch the whole thing just to see the out come.

I really like some of the dynamics. You perpective is great.

Keep up the good work. :buttrock: :applause:

Ed209 - Hey Andrew you know me working night and day to get this baby finished! Getting sick of it now! LoL

Aose - Hey nice your from China, I'm actually chinese. Some nice stuff coming from China I believe?

AVTPro - Do you already have a verision of my short? Yeah the unrendered scene that i have put together don't look that bad? As in it doesn't take your eye off the story it's self. the Sound and music editing is proving to be an ass but what can i say i'm and animator! In my school we have to fo f***ing everything!

Cheers Guy i never thought i'd get so much positive ffedback! This forum Rocks!

4 stars??? thanks guys I never had 4 stars before?

ninjacore - Sorry for the late reply. But my course does not specialise in character animation. It's just what i personally chose to get into. We have to do everything on the course like, story, sound, modeling, textureing editing, compositing , you know it's a very general. In the first year you do a few traditional animation excercies like the bouncing ball and stuff. What do you want to specialise in???

Thanks

John

I'm in the final year. We have a degree show if your interested in coming??

Rodi

John just PM me to reply here, he said i should say that the demo reel is the best thing i had ever seen, it makes me horny every time i see it, just the thought of that robot getting it on with the green guy is enough to give me a hot flush.

But on a serious note theres some clasically good animated stuff on here, he's an animator at heart and body.

good job john...

ninjacore
05-15-2003, 11:16 AM
hey dont worry john:)

damn your a friggin talented mofo, if you can do all that animation and still be able to do the other course stuff. sheesh. :D

i did my first character animation ( walk cycle, plus interaction with a box and a ball, and composited) in about 5 hours. which is rediculous. but its the nature of our course, to do everything rushed:thumbsdow

i guess my speciallity is modelling. i'm making my first car at the moment, and it looks pretty cool. but i still have much to learn and i have loads of other things i want to model. but i also want to start animating loadsa stuff as well. i think my 4rth year project will be based on some kind of 3d animation. who knows yet. aaahh, so much to learnn.....

degree show? that would be cool, but i doubt i'd be able too. i have my end of year presentations lined up, so i dunno.

The texture hand on the green man is not looking good to me(I think itīs has a mirror, but thatīs not really important cause you looking for animator job:hmm:

Man,I think you have great stuff in your web about acting, why you didīnt put it!? ..I think if you put it on the end after the credits could be fun:bounce:
