Hey All

Well this is what happens

I am using Dirextx8.1 at home as my 3ds max5 driver. Everything is fine. Smooth shaded view and stuff. Almost no lag in the viewports. Simply love it.

However, at school, I just got an admin to install Directx9 on one of the computers. It's acting all weird. Max says it cant use x9 but when i choose x8.1 it works fine...

But when I try to save max just closes itself. No save warning or anything. THe file I try to save to also gets corrupted or something because the next time I try to open it, max says it fails to open (thank god I made back ups). The files still fail on other computes running software mode.

On top of that, max now has a fuse. After about 2-3 minutes it will close itself. Totally weird and totally piss me off!

Anybody ever experience this problem or know what could be the problem and the solution?

Oh yeah I am using directx and not sfotware or openGL because I find the shaded view handled better with directx than the other two when I have high mesh objects.

Specs at home: Intel p4 23ghz 512ddr ram. GeForce4 ti300(something like that) w/128ddr

School: Intel P4 1.6ghz 256sd ram Radeon 7000/Radeon VE

If I understand you right, you should check discreet's website for updates/patches. Somewhere there is a directX9 patch / tool or whatever.

Are you running actual max 5.0 or are you running max 5.1? If you are running 5.0 I would suggest you download the 5.1 patch. It's free.

I had a similar problem, some video cards don't support pixel shader, my ATI 7200 crashes with directX9 and Max 5.1 service pack...:thumbsdow

Problem fixed!

I am not sure waht exactly happened. We tried to forcefully install Directx8.1, I ran 3dsmax5 (and yes, it IS 5.0[educational version, booo!!!]) and the same problem appeared. Couldnt save or anything.

Then my isntructor came by, opened up the advanced monitor and video card settings in my desktop properties (right click on desktop, properties). He randomly clicked on something in openGL (althou that shouldn't affect directx/direct3D). And then in the direct3D tab he turned on antiasing.

Everything works fine now (still not as good as my computer at school, but these are IBM buck-a-day computers[total trash!])

Totally weird. If anything, anti-aliasing should screw up direct3D even more, but whatever. I guess I was yelling at the puter too much or something.

Thanks for all your suggestion guys. And I tried to get 5.1 but the discreet ftp is blocked by firewall[school likes to do that] or down. So to anybody who has trouble running directx9 on max5, I recomment you randomly check off/on options that have nothing to do with directx or should make it worse. That's window's (2000) for you...
