View Full Version : Adding Decals/Stickers to my DVD player? - Texturing advice
Perambulator 05-14-2003, 10:10 AM I have modelled my DVD player, and applied the usual metal surfaces to it with gradients etc.
Now I'd like to add the brand labels etc.
Do I add the labels as a colour map, with a transarency map for where I want to the metal to be shown?
Planar map from the front?
The actual (real dvd) can be seen at:

Just make a polygon the shape of your texture. Apply the texture to it and place the polygon in the proper place on your Planer

Larry,
Not sure I understand. Surely I want to be applying the images onto the front of the polys at the front of my player, as transparency.
I'll post the Mesh later. It's a sub-d mesh.

If you are using UV texture technique, do the following:
1. Before that you should use UV texture maps on your object surface. for the label, make a masked TGA.
2. Save your current surface in Surface Editor, that you apply the label on. (*.srf)
3. Selection in Modeler: Selection which area you would like the label is placed, for example, top of the dvd player.
4. Make a new surface for the label.
5. Make a new UV map, for example, the UV axis should be Y, using Planar in Point 3.
6. In the Surface Editor, Load the surface that saved previously for the new surface.
7. In the texture tab, Add a new layer on top.
8. In the settings, Texture choose the label, and UV choose the new UV map.
9. Usually decals are not show directly in modeler but in rendering you should see the label, Done.

There are many ways to do it. First of all I would freeze the SubD mesh since you dont need it to be SubDs in layout.
You can apply the textures by:
1. Applying the labels as textures and using alpha maps to blend them into the underlying surface color/attributes.
2. UV map them on and again use alpha maps to blend them in.
3. Slice in where you want the labels to go using the stencil function. This creates new geometry with new surfaces but will be the exact size and dimensions of the decal/label. You can simply copy the surface attributes from the main DVD player surface to the stenciled areas and then you only have to worry about apply the decails where they go.
4. Map a decal onto a poly. You can use an alpha as a transparency map or clip map. Simply stick the poly where it needs to go (like a sticker) but just BARELY in front of the VCR polys.

Example:
A Butterfly Decal is on the skin using my technique mentioned above...
