View Full Version : Modeling a Guitar
Imminent 05-14-2003, 10:03 AM Ok, so this is my first major modeling project and im going to model this guitar:
http://imminent.orcon.net.nz/rr1t.jpg
So what are going to be the best tools to do this?
i was thinking of using pen tool for the body and extruding that out...
which ive sorta done already. but that top surface off the guitar has basically not points on it (except on the edges of course) so how do it add more detail so i can work with it?
when i try and do anything in modeler it complains cos that polygon has more than 4 sides ...
ive seen some other models (like some cars) where there are heaps of lines (roughly) evenly spaced over the whole model. im assuming this is another technique? would this be better?
excuse the n00b questions :)

Visit www.simplylightwave.com and take a look at the free tutorials section. There's a nice tut about modelling a strat.

Nice choice , u will find interesting this (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27974)
The answer to your question - use split polygon tool (or add edges plug) to break big polygon shape (that u made with pen tool) to small 4 and 3 sided poly... U mast do this before extrusion.
Good luck.

Cheers man, that model is awesome :D
im trying out that split polygon tool but a few questions:
how many points (roughly) should i have on the body of the guitar?
should i have a grid evenly covering pretty much the whole body? or just use that split polygon too to add lines where i might need them?
also, should i be setting up rectangles/whatever for where the pickup are gonna sit etc now or can i add all that later?
thanks

I don't know - it's depend on that kind of modeling u prefer - Sub - d or polygons.
If u choose Sub - d u need minimum points to cover the shape with Sub - d mode ...
If u going with old polygon method - it's depend on resolution of model - poly models flaws at rounded and curved surfaces (u can see this on close - ups) .
should i have a grid evenly covering pretty much the whole body? or just use that split polygon too to add lines where i might need them?
Just add lines there u need them, but think about mesh topology (if u use sub - d).
also, should i be setting up rectangles/whatever for where the pickup are gonna sit etc now or can i add all that later?
Pickup is independence part of guitar so no need to model body deck with pickups as one part ...
If u interesting on the way that i modeled my guitar - i can post more wireframes.
Good luck,
Eugeny.

this may be a silly question, but i'm not sure what is an edge plugin? is it a free plugin or commercial?

It's totally free (http://www.dstorm.co.jp/dslib/)
(go to modeler section )

Hey Eugeny,
I am amazed for this great model!!!
I am new at Lightwave,
but i would like to know if is possible you explain some tips
about your modeling , in this guitar.
I dont know how do you make this polygonos or whatever they call this.
I see you did smal subdivisions and looks great...
PLEASE, I BEG YOU, HOW DID YOU DO THAT???
Thanx in advance...
Ronaldo.

I cant understand why Lightwave doesnt have its own Edge selection device
What is Newtek waiting for ?
however i love the modeled guitar, good job

It's really nothing special about modeling ... I used "flat mesh" method and some edge loops tricks.
First u need to be familiar with whole modeling process in LW - search the Newtek site for modeling tutorials and this (http://members.shaw.ca/lightwavetutorials/Main_Menu.htm)
site. After that u need to master sub - d modeling (it's nothing special but have some tricks - here is some of them (http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv/)
Unfortunately i don't have time to write complete tutorial about modeling of this guitar.
I can only get some advance - keep modeling and explore objects modeled by some one else ( u have huge and excellent collection of models that comes with LW CD, b.t.w. it's have some good Fender Stratocaster guitar model - just open and see how ...)
That's all so far. (B.T.W. if u looking for some tips and tricks - make search of this forum for my name u will find some thread called "LW tips and tricks" )
Good luck.

Yes it's bit confusing but u have tones of free plugs for edge simulations ...

thanx for your reply brother.
I am really an old 3d max user.
I am using a lot of LW already, but i cant understand
how do you did that 'quads'... ( i dont know if the exaclty word is this....)
Cause you got a lot of smothness, if a few poligonos...
Thanx...
i will continue my searching on modeling techniques...

Hi, sorry about that..... but i'll try to help him in porttuguese...

ronaldo:

hope it helps...

vou dar uma olhada sim
obrigadão e até mais.

 :)
These "quads" are just representation of poly cage - with sub - d mode (something like Mesh Smooth in Max)
Hit "tub" to get it ...
Hope i understand your question and Digones explain it's well ...
