View Full Version : ergonomics in lightwave
Jaycee 05-14-2003, 07:14 AM Lately I've been noticing that I've been having trouble using my mouse when modelling in lightwave. :( I don't know if anyone else has had this problem before, but I wanted to ask what type of mouse everyone uses or what you would recommend. I found a website that has specialized mouses, but I'm not sure if any of them would work with modeller and layout (ie the pen doesn't work with them). Anyway, the site is http://www.contourdesign.com and the mouse is the perfit mouse. Would anyone know if the shuttle pro/shuttle express is compatible? Thanks!

Don't waste your money on those expensive mice. I am using a microsoft wheel mouse (optical) which can be bought for about 30 dollars US. And there are others similarly priced. Heck you can get a wireless for just a few dollars more.

yeah...save yer cash.
i just use a $30 LogiTech Optical Mouse and it's fine for LightWave...and Photoshop...and Illustrator and DF...
use that $100 you save to order pizza while you're building your next model in LightWave. :)

I've got the same mouse as Policarpo, works great. There's also some new-fangled wireless ones that also are really nice. Stick to Microsoft or Logitech, they make the best mice.

Intellimouse Explorer - 5 Buttons - You can program what each button does for each software package in the included mouse software. I love it. Fits my hand perfectly, nice and responsive. $50 US

I just got a cordless optical Logitech for home, but wound up switching back to the corded optical. It seemed harder to control than than the corded version, I couldn't use it as well in LW. Brought the cordless to work, where I use regular apps, and it works fine for that. Probably just me...

If trouble means fatigue or small pains in yours hands/arms/shoulders, and your work does not allow working less then 6 hours a day, get a pentablet (wacom intuos/graphire) ASAP and try to change mouse to your other hand. This sounds stupid to people who have no problems at all, but will eventually prevent worse pains or even cramps. Workpace (http://www.workpace.com) could help you too !!
BTW: if you ARE having pains/fatigue there is NO such thing as an ergonomic mouse !!!!!

TRick said it right... iF you are having probs with your arm, get it checked out.
After that, get a pen/stylus. They are great and is used for EVERYTHING on my system. LW and Modeler included. There's even a setting in the prefs area for you to set it to pen or mouse.
If you are willing to spend the $139 quoted here, this is a better bet.

I got one of those for my laptop, and I've been quite pleased with it.
Of course, a regular mouse feels even more like a bar of soap now than it used to, but you can't have everything ;)

It could also be the surface you've been using it on; I've found that the Logitech opticals work very poorly on reflective surfaces, but well on matte surfaces.
Also, the newer models track a lot better than the older ones. The only thing that gets on my nerves is the batteries; they don't last all that long. Fortunately, I have lots of Energizer recharchables floating around now... 4 of them in my keyboard, 2 in my mouse, and 4 in the charger...

I strongly recomend a tablet over a mouse any day. I love my Graphire2 and I tend to use it in everything except for a few games that I have where it maps the whole screen to a spot in the center about 5mmx5mm
It also REALLY helps to learn the keyboard shortcuts so that you are not constantly darting between the viewport and the menu bar.

I'll third this one - I got a small optical laptop mouse (kensington) for my daughter to use on my computer, but I soon started using it too. I've got my mouse speed set to high, and use it the same way Tudor does, thumb and ring finger - the palm of my hand rests on the mouse pad and never lifts or moves, all thumb and finger movement.

I have 2 Maya manuals to support my forearm (all they are good for imo :) .. That way my hand is always pointing downwards/straight.. I got some serious ache in my wrist a couple of years ago from always having it pointing upwards.. having these prevents this. (and I finally found some use for the Maya nurbs manual :)

Thanks for the replies everyone! Good ergonomics seems to be a serious part of this job....so I need to start thinking about ways to fix my problem whether it be a good book to support my arm, a wrist guard, or a different mouse.....its just too bad the pen doesnt' work on modelling......

Believe me...getting acquainted with a pen for doing all of your work takes some time, but in the end you will work healthier AND lots faster. I've been working over 60 hours a week for 8 years with a mouse, so I guess after this time I would count myself to the speedy users. It took me 2 to 3 weeks to double my speed with a pen and since 5 years I never once regretted this. I only use the mouse with my left hand to give my right some rest. These 100 hours can save you a lifetime !!! Most speed gain is with modeling !!!

Trick, you seem to be eluding to the fact that one CAN use the pen during modelling....which is crazy causemy pen doesn't work....it makes the points go all wacky if you try to drag them around, etc. IS there a way to configure lightwave modelling to work with a pen?

Sure is:
Press o
Second section, click "Tablet"
Done!
Works a TREAT and I only use a mouse to the left or when on others' 'inferior' setups. ;)

That worked great for layout! Uh, is there a similar option for modeller?

Go into modeler and TRY.
You will see that one affects the other.

An OLD ONE: pen STILL does NOT work in Messiah...this would be a reason to integrate it in LW....I don't want to start a subthread, just a reason why I never considered Messiah until today. LW is a lot faster with character stuff AND pen for me, then Messiah without it. :shame: :shame: :shame:
Even some of Worley's plugins didn't have tablet support before I asked them. So it seems there aren't that many people using it.
