Hey guys !

I don't post really often, but I really need your help on this matte. I guess there are many issues on this picture, but I worked so much on it that I can't see them anymore.

I'm waiting for your wise and precious advices, Thanks !

I think the image look fantastic.

My only crit is in the sky, There needs to be more perspective on the clouds, There should be small clouds as it gos into the background it will help add more depth, right now they just seem a flat.

Interesting, though i struggle to understand the scale, looks a little like a stream between two trees, but given the sky is it a valley?

Dave.

Hey,

- Ryan, you're right, i'm gonna fix the depth issue with the sky.

- Dave, now that you say it, I see several problems. Indeed it's a valley behind the pond, which I wanted to mix with a bad cloudy sky, to render a "heavy" atmosphere. I guess i didn't think enough before starting this matte. I've got many things to correct notably the scale of the pond, make it more credible by its size, move it back a little, and maybe create a water inlet going down along the left moutain.

Well, I'll try to fix that as faster as I can !

Thanks for the comments, that's encouraging.

I think this already has really nice depth and values, but the main issue i see is as Dave mentioned: scale. I think that this has lovely textural quality in the midground and background, but in the foreground we need more than just a suggestion with texture, you need to paint in a few elements to really tell the viewer what scale the whole piece is. If you painted in a tree that was huge in the foreground / some large rocks etc then we would know that the scale of the water is perhaps a small stream, and from that we can judge the whole rest of the scene. If you paint in a small tree at the front then the water becomes a huge river / lake and the whole scene from there back changes scale.
Be brave, paint in a few elements in the front that will really set the scale of the rest of the painting.

Look forward to updates!

This so much what I see when reading Hound of the Baskervilles, I can see a ghostly devil dog bounding and glowing over the pond.

Really good just need a sense of scale and you are there, i might have given you a clue above, as the book mentions a neolithic dwelling with a curious light at the window.

Food for thought

Hi Nick, and thank you for your comment.

I quickly sketched this update according to your advices.

I've changed the depth by putting some big mountains, rocks on the foreground and on the midground (I didn't want to put trees beacuse I wanted to make a "dead" landscape).
The pond (lake) comes from a more distant source and is bigger.

I hope that it works better.

Rich, i didn't read the book of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but I'm glad that it reminds you its particular ambience :) .

I'll wait for your opinions, don't hesitate to tell me if you feel confortable or not with this new version.

man, this image is so moody it works no matter what. great feeling to it. the scale issue is existent no matter what but i honestly prefer the first version over the others. if you're still into messing with it, try putting one selected focal point for the image. but anywayz, it feels good...
