View Full Version : Lake cabin
vENTANA 04-24-2008, 06:26 PM I'm just finishing up a matte painting course here on CGSociety (CGWorkshops ~ Matte Painting (http://courses.cgworkshops.com/forumdisplay.php?f=660) with David Luong).
This is one of two done during the 8 weeks. The reference photos were shot by a friend up in Canada. I incorporated
parts of about 5 photos to complete this piece.
My made up brief was... "a log cabin on the edge of a remote lake in the mountains, with a dock jutting out into the
water. It's surrounded by a forest and mountains in the background. Very secluded and private. perfect for a lovers
retreat."
Learning parts of After Effects, Maya and Nuke were also part of the course. Click here (http://clanexile.com/arguelles/PS_Painting/cabin_lake_ae1.flv) for a short animation done in After Effects
that was also one of the assignments during the course.
I'd recommend taking this course when it is offered again. David is a
great teacher. I still can't figure out how he kept up with all the posts
and critiques.

Very nice! Love the serenity of the whole image, like no one is present for hundreds of miles. On thing is that I think the dock looks like it floats up too much. Just doesn't look right. Great job!

nice image, in dee a place to live and grow old, I see a couple of issues ,first of the lack of resolution in your foreground grass, I can even see the jpeg artifacts there, also where the canoe is there's a sharp cut in the same texture that could be improved, the perspective on the dock is off, the water levels nedd more work , I mean it has the same level of dark close to the house and further in the background, the left foreground bushes are going behind the house in the top, other than that, I like the Bg. other than that it is just a matter of practice and practice a lot, keep up the good work !

I can see a few issues here that you could work to fix:
- Blurry edges on the grass. Try and get a better matte on the grass or repaint the grass blades.
- Mist looks a bit faked like its just following the tree lines too closely and isn't very random.
- Lots of blue color spill on the tree in the bottom left.
- Perspective on the jetty looks off, we shouldn't see so much of the top of it. The cabin perspective looks a bit too harsh too, and maybe a bit contrasty.
Got some good potential this one, keep workin

Thanks for the input, guys. there is so much I didn't see before. Been real busy this week but I'll be sure to jump on this over the weekend.

I have no more comments that I can add about the matte as others have picked up on it. The animation you supplied is my only concern. Google Andrew Kramer Video Copilot and you will find inspiration on how to do it with finesse. A straight zoom out is something that should never be done. Look at making a natural fluid move, with hand hold and depth of field. That would sell your animation.
As for the course wish I had the money and time to do it,
Rich

Thanks, Rockhoppermedia, I have found his site. It's an excellent site. This was my very first animation using After Effects or any other program. I was just thrilled to get it moving, lol. Thanks for the advice.

Nice big and OPEN composition :)
Pretty much what everyone else said above.
The house itself is very distorted when compared to the rest of the scene. This tends to happen when lifting the element from the source photo which is already distorted due to the wide lens and then dropping it into an undistorted composition, try undisorting the house photo first then dropping it in.
With the trees, try doing a defringe. layer > defringe > matting > (3-6 pixel)
Best,
Dave.
